Paul and I were friends many years ago. I was just looking up old friends and came across this. I met him in the parking lot at Sterks. He was my go to guy..I had tickets to a cubs game and I called him last minute. There he was. Such a sweet guy. I remember he bought me a Cubs hat too when he went to the concession. One night we sat outside and sHared a gallon of ice cream. When he went away to college he tried to keep in contact with me. Our lives went in different directions and we lost touch. But whenever I would hear a Kinks song I thought of him...sorry for your loss...

Paul and I played football together during our first three years at T.F. North, and while we may not have hung out together after practice or in the off-season, we always got along well. Even though we were from opposite sides of town and such things mattered in those days - we had something in common: we each had an older brother who'd left their mark on TFN's football program.
At the end of our championship season (1970), I turned in my helmet, pads, and cleats for the last time. As Peter Gent wrote in The Franchise, though I knew I could do it again, I would not do it anymore. My passion was for making music, not playing middle linebacker.
At the start of the following season, my decision was met with anger and disapproval by all save my brother and Coach Ron Armstrong. When I tried to explain, it seemed no one wanted to know. But in June, 1972, shortly after we had graduated, Paul and I crossed paths at River Oaks Mall. We walked along for a while, then he said I was angry when you didn't come out to play last season, and I thought you'd quit on us, just like everybody else said you did. But I've thought about it and I understand why you had to do it. We never saw each other again, but I've never forgotten that walk through the Mall. You don't have to be the best of friends to be good teammates: you share a bond that can be neither easily explained nor easily dismissed. I'm proud to be able to say Paul was my teammate. Vaya con Dios, Short Round.

My sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Paul. I haven't seen him for a long time but remember him as a student/athlete at TF North. May he rest in peace.

Dear Paul Jr.,

Your eulogies today would have made your father very, very proud. Both you and your son have done him a great honor.

In high school I was known, more than likely, as The Hippie. Your dad was, of course, The Jock. But strangely, we both got along. Whether in the hallways where your goofy dad would strut up to me and shout Hey, hippie! and I would return the favor with Want some acid? (not that I actually had any, of course), or in Mr. Water's General Science class where our common basis for conversation was not the Periodic Table or the Kelvin scale but, The Kinks.

You have a lovely family, Paul. You are blessed. And your father had a very good heart even this old hippie knows that!

Take care and may all the wonderful memories you have of your father comfort you in the weeks and months ahead.
