Raymond Stephens Obituary

Raymond Stephens

Jan. 27, 1928 - Oct. 14, 2023

Raymond Stanfield "Ray" Stephens,  met our gracious and loving God at 3:33 AM Saturday, October 14, passing away peace-fully in Valparaiso among his loving family members. Ray was 95 years old.

Respected, beloved by many, Ray lived an exemplary life as a dedicated husband and father of five. He worked earnestly to support his family as a safety professional at the UIC Medical Center and campus. Ray demonstrated a zest for life, encouraging and helping others. His hobbies included motorcycling, sailing, music, and golf. He spoke from the heart, shared a quick wit, and had a joke for every occasion.

Born in Hammond in 1928 to Richard F. and Ruth (Huffman) Stephens, Ray lived nearly his entire life in Hammond, attending Edison, Hammond High (1945), and Purdue University College of Sciences (1949). In 1951, he married the love of his life, Julia Kohut, also a Hammond High and Purdue grad. They were married more than 72 years.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, sister Rosalie, brother Bud, and many extended family members.

He is survived by his wife, Julia; five children: Jill (Steve Oliva), Alan (Judy Teibel), Elaine (Ken Rivich), Bill (Sue Varner), Kay (Irv Corbin); eight grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Tom, Julianna, Dustin, Ryan, Gordon, Daniel, Courtney, Tessa; 14 great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren, one great-great step grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Ray donated his body to the Indiana University School of Medicine. A private family gathering will be held to remember our amazing patriarch, with no public services planned. Donations honoring Ray and made to the charity of your choice are welcome.

I shared Mr. Stephen´s obituary with all of my siblings. We all agreed that he was always such a nice friendly man. I recall a few times when he either adjusted or repaired my bike. We send our deepest sympathies but also hats off to a long life well lived
