RICHARD DREES "BARBER DICK" HESSVILLE, IN

Richard Frank Drees, age 73, of Hessville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at the Community Hospital in Munster. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Arlene. (nee Griffioen) Drees; two sons: Paul M. (Anna) Drees Sr. of Dyer and Douglas F. (Judy L.) Drees of Cedar Rapids, IA; one daughter, Christina A. Drees of Silver Lake, IN; 10 grandchildren: Paul M. (fiance Amanda Brunn) Drees, Jr., Ryan A. (fiance Ashley Higgason) Drees, Fred Pullen, Chuck Pullen, Douglas F. Drees Jr., Charles, Benjamin M., Alexander W., Jessica L. and Jillian A. Drees; one great grandchild, Lhogan Drees; one sister, Lorraine Williams of LaCross, WI; brother-in-law, Wayne A. (Pat) Griffioen of Cedar Rapids, IA; uncle of Chuck Williams, Mark, Danny and Sherri Griffioen; and many other nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents: Leo F. and Clara Drees; and brother-in-law, Duane (Lou) Griffioen. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 10:00 AM at Bocken Funeral Home, 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond (Hessville) with Pastor Robert Raschka officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Hammond. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Friday, May 8, 2009 at Bocken Funeral Home from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 PM. Dick was a lifetime resident of Hammond. He owned and operated his barber shop in the Hessville section of Hammond on 169th Street where he was known as "Barber Dick" by his friends and patrons. He was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church of Griffith for the past 46 years. Dick was a U.S. Navy veteran and served during the Korean Conflict as a barber and broadcaster. He was a member of American Legion Post #232 and VFW Post #7881 of Hessville. He was past Recording Secretary of Barbers Local #322 and held a Master Barbers license. Dick was known as "Clipper the Clown" with the Calumet Clowns. He was a member of Garfield Masonic Lodge #569, F.& A.M., a 32nd Degree member of Scottish Rite Consistory, member of Orak Shrine & ARAB Patrol Shrine, Valley of South Bend. He was a broadcaster for WJOB for a short time. Dick was a devoted husband and loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and a wonderful Christian Man. Arlene,
I'm very sorry to hear of Dick's passing. He cut my hair for many, many years. He also gave my oldest son his first haircut. He is now 31. I haven't found anyone that could cut my hair like Dick.
