Robert Conover Obituary

Robert 'Bondo Bob' Conover

October 8, 1936 - May 6, 2023

Robert "Bondo Bob" Conover, 86 of Hobart, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 6, 2023. He was born October 8, 1936 in Newman, Illinois to Roy and Hazel Conover.

Bob worked in the railroad industry for over 40 years where he earned the nickname Bondo Bob. He started his career at the New York Central before going to the E.J. & E. He retired after 35 years of service at the Indiana Harbor Belt, where his favorite job was the BP-2. His family was so important to him and working at the railroad allowed him to be a good provider.

Bob did not slow down upon retirement. His lifelong hobby was working on cars and he was able to enjoy his retirement years doing just that at his shop World Headquarters of Conover Motors in Hanna, IN. He was a generous man, always willing to help those in need. He believed in second chances, never judged a person, and always knew how to make friends wherever he went. He was a proud member of the Garfield Masonic Lodge #569. He was also a member of the Orak Shrine and South Bend Scottish Rite.

He is survived by his children Bobbi Conover, Steven (Tiffany) Conover, and Amy (Kris) Giba; his grandchildren Jordan, Stephani, Kaelyn, Madison, and John; his sister Betty; special friends whom he considered family Chris Wallin, Mary Lydon, and Pat Lydon Jr.; and numerous extended family members. He is preceded in death by his wife Sharon, who was his sweet pea and the love of his life; his parents; and his grandkitty Eutopia.

Bob was always a giving person and as a final act of selflessness he donated his body to the Indiana University School of Medicine's Anatomical Education Program.

A memorial service in his honor will take place Sunday, May 21 at Bethel Church 10202 Broadway, Crown Point, IN. A service celebrating Bob's life will begin promptly at 130 pm. Visitation with the family will immediately follow.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his honor to Shriners Children's Hospital www.shrinerschildrens.org

Bob worked with my dad on the railroad for over 27 years before my dad moved to Florida. His nick name for my dad was Bozie or he would call him Al. during their time working on the railroad they often worked other jobs together like used auto sales. Running to auto action. Bob was a family friend even after my dad's passing. Bob was a very nice man. Bob was always very cheerful man. He loved talking railroad or cars. Bob will be missed. My heart goes out to the family. May you find comfort in all your loving memories.
