Robert Wayne Stevens, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2025, in his hometown of Hammond, Indiana, at the age of 97. Born on January 11, 1928, Robert was the cherished son of Edward J. Stevens and Mabel R. Pierce (Fisher). His life was a testament to resilience, love, and the joy of family.
Wayne lived a rich and fulfilling life, marked by acts of kindness and an unwavering sense of humor. He was quick with a joke, always finding ways to bring laughter into the lives of those around him. He was a proud WWII Army veteran, having served his country with honor and dedication. After returning from military service, Wayne built a career that spanned many years, 30 at American Steel, Amsted and Republic Steel, where he was respected and admired by his colleagues.
On February 14, 1945, Wayne married his beloved wife, Mary Stevens (Noble), in Crown Point, Indiana. Their love story blossomed over the decades, culminating in an incredible 80 years of marriage. Together, they raised a family filled with love and laughter, leaving a legacy that will endure through the generations.
Wayne is survived by his devoted wife, Mary, and their son, Edward Stevens. He took great pride in his role as a grandfather to Jeffrey Tuskan, wife Laura, Christopher Tuskan, wife Kimberly, Edward Stevens, and Brian Stevens. His heart swelled with love for his great-grandchildren, including Kylee, Nathan, Alyssa, Delaney, and Joey, as well as one great-great-granddaughter Eliana, who will carry forward the family name and values.
Despite the joy his life brought to many, Wayne faced the heartache of loss. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Sharon Tuskan (Stevens); his sister, Eunice Goddard (Stevens); his brother, John R. Stevens, Sr.; and his sister, Edith Laura Pierce. Each of these losses left a profound impact on Wayne, yet he remained a pillar of strength and love for his family.
Outside of his professional and family life, Wayne loved gathering with the family, playing cards and had a passion for bowling, which provided him with both joy and camaraderie. His competitive spirit and love for the game brought him many cherished memories and friendships over the years.
As we remember Robert Wayne Stevens, we celebrate a life well-lived-a life filled with laughter, love, and service to others. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, and his legacy will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of his family and friends.
In accordance with his wishes, a private funeral service will be held to honor Wayne's life and memory. The family invites all who knew and loved him to hold him close in their hearts and recollections. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a veterans'
charity of your choice, honoring the service and sacrifice of Robert and countless others who have served our country.
Robert Wayne Stevens will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him. In times of sorrow, let us remember his laughter, the joy he brought to our lives, and the enduring love he shared with us all. Rest in peace, Wayne. Your legacy of love and humor will forever remain a guiding light in our lives.
