Rydholm Dorothie Vickers

Dorothie Rydholm Vickers Chapel Hill, NC/ Gary, IN/Munster, IN Dorothie Rydholm Vickers, age 80, of Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill, NC died on September 29, 2003 after an illness of several years. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Robert S. Vickers; three children: Nancy (Rob) Verboon of Chapel Hill; Judith (Kevin) Henke, also of Chapel Hill, and James (Jenn) Vickers of San Jose, CA. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Caitlin, Jeffrey, and Matthew Verboon, and Sarah and Rachel Henke, all of Chapel Hill. She has three sisters and a brother-Marjorie Fries, Shirley Steere, Barbara Simms and Kenneth Rydholm-still living in Marquette. Dorothie was born in Marquette, MI to the late Roy Rydholm and Hazel Zerbel Rydholm. During WWII she enlisted in the Navy WAVES and later enrolled at Northern Michigan University (music and voice). In 1949 she began a nine-year career as a secretary at the Standard Oil Co. (Ind) in Chicago. After marriage she lived in Gary, IN and Munster, IN as well as in Brussels (Belgium), Madrid (Spain), and Northwood (England). She and her husband moved to Chapel Hill in 1996. She enjoyed singing in choirs and was active in her hometown Episcopal Church choir, several WAVE choirs, and the American Womens Club choir in Brussels. She also enjoyed writing poetry and was published in ideals magazine and received numerous awards for her poems. She participated for several years in the Meals on Wheels program in Hammond, IN and recorded many books for the American Association for the Blind and Dyslexic. Dorothie was a member of the Westminister Presbyterian Church and P.E.O. in Munster and was a member of the University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill. There will be a memorial service for Dorothie at 10:30am Thursday at Carolina Meadows. Memorial gifts may be made to Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements are by Cremation Society of the Carolinas.
