Shannon Reading
Mar 18, 1978 - Jan 19, 2025
Shannon Reading, 46, of Crown Point, IN, passed away peacefully with family at her side on January 18, 2025 at 11:45 p.m. after a 13-year battle with brain cancer. She was born 3/18/78 in Harvey, IL, to Steve and Margie O'Connor.
Shannon was a graduate of Crete-Monee High School (1996), and Eastern Illinois University (2001). While at Crete-Monee Shannon met the love of her life, Joshua, and they began their life long relationship. After eight years of dating and graduating from college, they married (2003). They were blessed with two children, Brooke and Austin. She loved her family and always put them first.
Shannon worked for many years in the family business, M&J Underground Inc., Monee, IL.
In 2007, Shannon cofounded J.R.'s Johns Inc., Grant Park, IL. She ran this business until 2014, when it was sold. This allowed her to retire and become a full-time mom.
In addition to working, she always supported her children's endeavors. When Brooke showed interest in dance at age three, Shannon embraced the role of a dedicated Dance Mom, supporting her daughter through 16 years as a lifetime achievement dancer at Dance Alive Studio in Manteno. Brooke is currently a sophomore at Purdue University studying Business Management. Shannon also supported and embraced Austin's football and wrestling interests, as a proud football and wrestling mom, starting with the Manteno Wildcats football program (age six) and Region Wrestling Academy to current day as a Bulldog at Crown Point High School.
Shannon also enjoyed yoga, marathon running, traveling, reading, and frequent get-togethers with family and friends.
Shannon grew up attending the Church of the Holy Family (Episcopal), Park Forest. She and Josh raised their children attending St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Monee. After moving to Crown Point, the family attended the Living Stones Church.
There are many words that people would use to describe Shannon. These four words do not do justice to Shannon. We remember her as kind, caring, giving, and faith-filled. Even during her last days, she was more concerned about inconveniencing her caregivers than about her own problems. Shannon used social media daily for several years to post a bible quotation. Her many followers across the country would look forward to her postings. She was an inspiration to so many.
Shannon is survived by her husband, Josh; her children, Brooke and Austin, of Crown Point; her parents, Steve and Margie O'Connor, of Washington Island, WI; and her brothers, Sean (Fran) O'Connor, Frisco TX; and Patrick (Emilie) O'Connor, Cedarburg, WI. She is also survived by her parents-in-law, Mike and Jan Reading, Monee, IL.; her sister-in-law, Angela (Jeremy) Creasbaum, St. John, IN; many loving aunts and uncles; and Josh's grandmother, Jean Stelter, who has lived with the family since they moved to Crown Point. She will also be sorely missed by her nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind many dear friends in Crete, Grant Park, and Manteno, IL; as well as Crown Point, IN.
Shannon was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents Jack and Joan O'Connor; and her maternal grandparents, Michael and Vivan Metz; and grandparents, Everett and Freda (Mimi) Reading. Also, her grandfather-in-law, Louis Stelter.
