THEODORE "TED" G. KARRAS FORMERLY, GARY/MILLER BEACH

Theodore "Ted" G. Karras, age 81, formerly of Gary/Miller Beach, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2016, surrounded by his wife and three sons. He played in the NFL for nine seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Rams. He was a member of the 1963 World Champion Chicago Bears. Ted graduated from Emerson High School, 1952, I.U., 1956 and was a United States Marine. He was a Gary City Councilman 1972-1980, a school teacher/coach in the Hammond Public Schools, Realtor and a football coach at Andrean, St. Xavier and Rose-Hulman. Ted was blessed with a beautiful singing voice and appeared in the Gary Music Theatre and other local music theatres. Ted was preceded in death by his father, Dr. George Karras; mother, Emmeline Karras Schofield (nee Wilson); two brothers: Nick and Alex. He is survived by his wife, Anna; three sons: Ted Jr. (Jennifer), Tony (Robin), Jeffery; six grandchildren: Teddy, Taylor, Joseph, Luke and Anna Karras and Marcus Downs; two brothers: Louis (Dorothy), Paul (Carol); sister, Helene Reisen Plunkett; many loving nieces and nephews. Friends may visit with Ted's family on Friday, January 29, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Burns Funeral Home, 701 East 7th Street, Hobart. Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Burns, Fr. Andrew J. Corona officiating. Interment at Ridgelawn Cemetery. Mr. Karras was my gym teacher at Spohn in the late 80s. Even with his history of being in the NFL, he was very humble. He was a very nice man and teacher. I was very sorry to read of his passing and send my condolences to the family.
