Walter Schultz Obituary

Walter Simon Schultz

Feb. 17, 1941 - July 28, 2023

SCHERERVILLE, IN - Walter Simon Schultz died after a brief illness on July 28, 2023. Wally was born February 17, 1941 in Chicago, IL and spent his entire childhood in Whiting, IN.

Walter graduated from Bishop Noll in 1959, following graduation he got his BA from St. Josephs's College in Rensselaer in 1963. Walter received his MA from Purdue West Lafayette in 1967 and began his Doctoral studies at Purdue. He served on numerous committees over the years, with the John Purdue Club and served on the Committee at the School of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Elizabeth (nee Liebert) Schultz. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Kathleen (nee Boyle) Schultz; sisters in law, Mary Ann Boyle (Robert Laing), Carol Boyle (widow of Kevin Boyle); special niece, Cindy Cimesa (George); special nephew, David Swaim (Shawn); nieces, nephews, a plethora of former students who he always referred to as "his kids"; and numerous dear friends.

Walter began his love and total commitment to education after teaching 4th grade at St. Joseph's School in Dyer. In 1963 he was recruited by a school on the East Side of Chicago, St. Francis De Sales and for the next 41 years he would call it home. He dedicated his life to the passion he had for Catholic education and helping young adults. Walter would serve as a teacher, department head, coach, AD, vice principal, principal and CEO of Development and Fundraising. After retirement he taught education courses and supervised student teachers at Purdue Calumet.

Walter was passionate about SFDS, as he could give you an antidote about nearly every student he had encountered at the school if asked. He was obsessed with all things Purdue, as he had season tickets for basketball and football for 40 years.

Walter was an avid eclectic reader had an enormous vocabulary and enjoyed watching Jeopardy and was told by many he should have been a contestant.

He absolutely adored his wife, Kathy and was very proud of her professional and personal achievements. Walter loved his home, enjoyed talking to his dear friends, and took pleasures in the simple things of life. He loved traveling and was fortunate to have visited Australia 6 times, New Zealand, Europe, Russia, Canada, the British Isles and many places in the USA. His love for meeting people was evident on all trips.

A Celebration of a Life well lived will be held at a later date. Those that wish to remember Wally in a special way may make gifts to the Schererville Civic Fund or Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine, Lafayette, IN www.kishfuneralhome.net

I was a student in Mr. Schultz's 4th grade class at St . Joe's in Dyer, 1963. His first teaching assignment after college. I still
remember every word of every verse of "Frog Went a'Courtin'"
that he taught us. He would send Kathy Winicki and me down the street to buy candy that he threw out to the class. He gave each of us a big storybook for Christmas. His car had cool headlights with covers that retracted automatically.

I was very sorry to hear that Walter passed away. I enjoyed our occasional tet-a-tets, usually before or after the mass at the Polish monastery, particularly about our mutual experiences in Whiting and especially at our "alma mater" St. Adalbert Polish school. He was a great guy and I will definitely miss him and his smile.

Our sincere condolences to you Kathy and your family.
