ADELLE GORDON

GORDON-- Adelle Rose. Adelle Rose Gordon, age 99 1/2, died at home in Manhattan on June 9. The second of seven siblings, she grew up in Norwich, CT and attended the University of Connecticut. A feminist pioneer, she wrote her 1951 masters thesis for Columbia University School of Social Work on the mothers she met in Central Park, with her toddler, who were conflicted about juggling careers and parenthood. A social worker for decades at the Rochester, NY Mental Health Center, she helped thousands of teenagers and taught at the University of Rochester. She is survived by her daughter Meryl Gordon, grandsons Jesse Gordon and Nate Gordon, their families Meg Wolf, Jake Rakochy, great-grandchildren Ozzy Gordon and Sadie Gordon, daughter-in-law Sarah Cooper-Ellis, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband David H. Gordon (1922-2021), son Bart Gordon (1948-1995) and son-in-law Walter Shapiro (1947-2024.)
