ALFRED SCHNEIDER Obituary

SCHNEIDER--Alfred R.,

a vice president of policy and standards with American Broadcasting Company who was known for setting widely- adopted guidelines for television network standards and practices and for shaping the development of the television docudrama, died on June 17 in New York City. He was 90. He was the author of the book "The Gatekeeper: My 30 Years As A TV Censor." He often testified in Washington, DC on behalf of the television networks. Mr. Schneider was born in Brooklyn in 1926. During World War II he served as a noncommissioned officer with the Pacific Air Command, receiving an honorable discharge. He graduated in 1949 from Hamilton College with a BA and Phi Beta Kappa honors and graduated from Harvard Law School in 1952. That year he joined the legal department of American Broadcasting-Paramount Theaters and later moved into business affairs. After a three-year stint at rival network CBS, he rejoined ABC, working as an assistant to ABC network founder Leonard H. Goldenson, and by 1973 was an executive in broadcast standards and practices; he served in various executive roles for ABC for nearly three decades. Mr. Schneider died of natural causes. He is survived by three children and seven grandchildren. His wife, the artist Jane Schneider, died in 2006.

He was the best boss ever. He was a gentleman, respectful, a great role model. I’ll never forget how he had an Indian tribe in his office to ensure that they would approve the way in which they were about to be portrayed. I feel honored to have him as my boss. While it was only a brief period of time, it was an experience I’ll always remember.
