Alice Aronson Obituary

ARONSON--Alice, of NYC and Amherst, MA, died peacefully on June 16, 2007, in her home in Amherst. Born in Manhattan, she was the daughter of Aron and Augusta Halpert. Married to the late Dr. Allan R. Aronson for 50 years, she is survived by her children, Richard, Lucy and Anne, and by six grandchildren. Alice attended Vasar and graduated from Barnard in 1944. She illustrated a syndicated newspaper column, "A Lovelier You," for 20 years, and in 1960, she illustrated a book, Here's to You Miss Teen. She was a lifelong member of the Society of Illustrators, where an exhibit of her artwork appeared in 2005. In her second career, she became a horticultural therapist at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine in New York, where she volunteered from 1980 to 2006. She served for many years on the auxiliary at Tisch Hospital, and received the United Hospital Fund's Volunteer Achievement Award in 2000. Alice was a true New Yorker, sharing the city's cultural activities with her many friends. She also had a deep interest in politics and current events; a day without reading The New York Times was incomplete. Gifts may be made to: The Glass Garden, Rusk Institute, 400 East 34 St., NY, NY 10016, Attn: Nancy Chambers. A memorial service will be held in NYC at a later date.

My mother, Alice Aronson, was a true New Yorker. She loved the City deeply from birth to death. She provided me in childhood with unique opportunities to experience the richness of culture and diversity and art and political dialogue that New York offers. She and my father gave me educational opportunities that literally opened the whole world up to me.

In love and gratitude,

Dick Aronson
