ALVIN SILVERMAN Obituary

SILVERMAN--Alvin, died at age 93 on December 28, 2016. Husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle,

father-in-law, and friend, he knew how to love and be loved. Born an only child in Brooklyn, he attended Erasmus Hall High School and Cornell University, where his education was interrupted by service in the field artillery in WWII. After he was graduated from Cornell, he attended Harvard Law School. He began his career as an attorney in the law firm led by the late Lawrence A. Wien and spent more than six decades as a cherished partner and sought-after mentor. He was as beloved for his personal qualities as for his legal skills. A founding member of the American Jewish Committee L.I. region, he also served for 36 years on the Roslyn School Board, including as president. For 63 years he was married to the late Selma Bakst Silverman, with whom he experienced the deep pleasures of family and friends in Roslyn and Sagaponack. He loved playing tennis and was an avid New Yorker who appreciated and relished the best the city had to offer. He frequently advised family and friends to "carpe diem" and he lived that advice to the fullest. He is survived by his family who loved him beyond words: his children, Barbara Berke, Andrew Silverman and his wife, Molly Paul, and Nancy Silverman and her husband, Benjamin Nathans; his eight grandchildren (Jessica, Sally, Jennifer, Nicholas, Will, Gabriel, Ilana and Dora) and three great- grandchildren (Caroline, Emily, and Charlie). We will all miss him greatly and will cherish his memory forever. Services will be held on January 1 at noon at the Riverside-Nassau North Chapels, Great Neck, NY. His memory can be honored by donations to two organizations he whole-heartedly supported: Planned Parenthood and the ACLU.

I met Alvin in 1976 and remember our first lunch together like it was yesterday on Barbara's introduction from that moment I knew he was a special person to me. I went on to marry Barbara and we remained very close for the rest of his life. I will miss him and his greeting to me whenever we spoke "HELLO JON". I don't think I ever met someone like him or will ever again. I will miss you.

Mr. Silverman was my friend at his/our Melville offices. He reminded me of my Great Grandfather and we discussed the similarities often. He was part of the "Greatest Generation". Rest in peace Alvin...I will make sure my tree that you gave me always stays nourished and healthy....

My heart goes out to Barbara and the rest of the family of Alvin Silverman. I worked with Mr. Silverman for over 30 years at W&M. He was my supervising attorney. I learned much from him. We shared many stories about Brooklyn. He was kind and giving. I ill never forget him. Barbara Ross

Sharp edges, contest and confrontation inhere in the practice of law as in almost no other profession. Alvin had the refreshing singular talent, legal skills, wisdom and gift, to employ his extraordinary warmth and sense of humor as the cornerstones of his successful legal career. It was my good fortune and delight to have been one of his partners at the Wien law firm for three decades. Memories of him will always induce a smile. His was a shining example of a life well lived and productive.

May the God of Abraham be with you as we await the fulfillment of seeing Abraham offspring filled the earth like the stars in the heavens. Genesis 15: 5,6.
