ANDREW KIRBY Obituary

KIRBY--Andrew Louis. 61, of Greenwich, CT passed away on July 14, 2020 from a heart attack while vacationing with his family. He spent his last days in a place he loved, the Kirby family camp in the Adirondacks. Andrew was born in New York City on August 6, 1958, son of William and Ann (Pfohl) Kirby. He grew up with his large, loving family in Forest Hills Gardens, Queens, commuting with siblings to Saint David's School in Manhattan. Andrew attended Phillips Exeter Academy and the Lawrenceville School, Duke University (BSE 1980), and Harvard Law School (JD 1983). He received the 2020 Forever Duke Award for his decades of active involvement in the Duke Alumni Association. Professionally, Andrew wore many hats. Over the course of his career, he was a corporate lawyer at Shearman & Sterling, in- house counsel and Director of Acquisitions for Cadbury Schweppes, founder and President of SodaMate, and President of Plaxall, the family real estate and plastics manufacturing business in Long Island City, NY. He served on multiple nonprofit boards including the Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement, the Queens Museum, and the Long Island City Partnership. While he wasn't a practicing engineer in his career, he was a member of Tau Beta Pi honor society, and his passion for innovating, creative problem solving, and understanding how things work was apparent in all he did. Andrew's interests were also varied. He was a superb athlete who loved skiing, tennis, paddle tennis, and golf with friends and family. Andrew was the spark that enlivened any gathering. Thanks to him, family celebrations often concluded with music, dancing, or late-night bowling. During childhood, Andrew's family vacationed at Rockywold Deephaven Camps on Squam Lake, NH, a tradition Andrew continued with his own family. His daughter Johanna was married there in June 2019, a celebration that brought Andrew immense joy. Andrew is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years Nancy (Trettis) Kirby, son Duncan Kirby (Alessandra), daughter Johanna Allen (Brandon), and mother Ann Kirby. Andrew is also survived by brothers William, Jr. (Anne), Brian (Mona), and Peter; and sisters Mathis Powelson (Stephen), Paula (Peter McWhinnie), and Julia Vien (George), as well as many loving nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Andrew will be held at a later date. Donations in his name may be made to the Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement.

I am beyond shocked to read about Andrews passing. I had the pleasure of knowing Andrew on both a business and personal level. He was one of the kindest sweetest and smartest person I’ve ever known.
May he Rest In Peace.

Although Andrew was in my class at Exeter, I joined the class halfway way through, whereas I presume he started as a Prep. I learned to row my Upper year, and the few times I was in his boat, he always provided explicit guidance in how to improve and add more value to Exeter Crew. His guidance was always colorful. He set the standard, in ways both good and bad. He left us too soon; Andrew will be missed.

I have good memories of Andy as I knew him then many years ago at Exeter. I am not at all surprised by the wonderful things he accomplished and the joy he brought to his family and friends that I read about in that beautiful obituary. I am very sorry for your loss. My deepest condolences to all.

I met Andrew when we were both freshmen at Duke, and we roomed together during our sophomore year at the Kappa Sigma House. He was a great friend and an amazing intellect and I will miss him greatly. I am saddened to see him leave us at such a young age, but I am grateful to have known Andrew since he was one of the most solid guys I knew at Duke. Blessings to Andrew's family.

Such a humble guy. One would never know of his impressive cv and all his achievements. Such a shame that he and his family were cheated out of what would have been many more wonderful years together.

I was in the same class (72)as Andrew at St.David’s.We were both smaller in stature so we were tasked with sitting on a narrow ledge in the gym and recording the basketball games scores on a blackboard.I send Andrew’s family my sincere condolences.

My condolences and prayers to Andrew's family and the entire Kirby clan for your loss. I might have been one of Andrews's oldest friends since I grew up in Forest Hills and was part of the famous St. Davids carpool. I spent a lot of time with the Kirbys ( The station wagon with Frank, Sun and Surf, West Side Tennis Club, Community House, etc ) and at the Kirbys house( football in front, basketball in back, "The Great Escape" Sleepovers, etc ) . Andrew was intelligent, witty, adventurous, kind, and knew how important family and friends were. Whenever I think of Andrew I smile because that's the kind of person he was. Someone who lit up the room and brought a smile to your face. Rest in Peace Andrew. You will be missed. Bill Lalor

Andrew will be sorely missed by his dozen or so men friends who began an ongoing 20 friendship of golf, skiing, birthday parties and other special occasions. The group first formed in Patagonia for a week of wild river rafting and remained close through thick and thin. Andrew was a significant contributor to the group and rarely, if ever, missed a chance to join all of his "good buddies". Sincere condolences, Nancy, Duncan and Johanna. If anyone packed 75 years into only 61, from my perspective, it was Andrew.
