ANDREW MAZZONE Obituary

MAZZONE--Andrew B.

The Henry George School of Social Science mourns the loss of Andrew B. Mazzone, president and CEO of its board of directors. Andy, who was born in Massachusetts and resided in New York City, died February 21, 2017. His vision and passion heralded many successes for the school, founded in 1932 to establish economic justice and sustainable prosperity. These achievements included: Smart Talk, a series of wide-ranging video interviews with prominent economists, political scientists and social thinkers; and encouraging the school's free courses in political economy, tax reform and globalization. Andy graduated from Babson College in Massachusetts with a degree in finance. He also earned an advanced degree in economics from the New School and Cambridge University. A decorated Vietnam Veteran, Andy was president of Perkin Elmer Corp., and chief executive of many other corporations. He leaves behind cherished family members and many dedicated friends and colleagues. Memorial contributions may be made in Andy's memory to the Henry George School of Social Science, 5 West 19th St., Suite 2C, New York, New York 10011. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

I think of Andy every year around this time, as a former student at HGSSS he left an indelible impression on me. During these turbulent times he comes to mind even more often. His wit, wisdom, and insight are sorely missed. I am forever grateful for having been exposed to this fine gentleman.

Andy, every year that passes, I miss more and more your rational yet world-wise cynical take on life. We are spiraling out of control down here. Help! ;)

-Benjamin Disraeli's words express my feelings about Andy: "Man is never so manly as when he feels deeply, acts boldly, and expresses himself with frankness and with fervor." His memory is a blessing to many.

Andy's favorite movie was "Casablanca," so it seems fitting to remember him with "Here's looking at you, kid."

I just remembered my very last conversation with you was at the end of the HGS annual social event that you periodically arranged. At that time my Engineer colleague and I were modeling what would have been (and may yet be) the world's largest and most innovative building, to be sited in downtown NYC and over the East River. At that time, in my fear and arrogance, I wanted to keep it close to my chest, even from you, and I told you I had something great but could not share it yet. You asked me if I could at least give you a hint. I didn't, but boy I wish I had the opportunity to take your advice over the last 2+ years! I'm sure your experience would have saved me a lot of fruitless meetings and lost partners. I may get there yet, but I can't think of anyone better to help than you, after countless encounters. You never had their fear or lack of vision; I didn't realize how rare those qualities were. I sure do now.

I have fond memories of Andrew Mazzone, a man that knew how to treat his employees and other high ranking Department Leaders. Always aware of the 'goings on' within the company and listening to the gossip. He reward employees with baseball tickets, etc. to those who won at a new idea for the business. Or a simple competition. He was exceptional at reading people. Andy and I spoke about eight months before he passed.
He and R. Landers recognized my value and promoted me within my department. Andy Mazzone showed an interest in helping my husband, Henry Lemanis, gain a new title 'Engineer Aide' for his personal growth and development. My mind's eye sees Andy Mazzone sitting in the back of our Cafeteria with a "good morning." Life at "Metco" was not the same when he left. More than once he invited me to join him at his new company. By that time, I was a successful Realtor. He was my friend and I miss him.

Serendipity brought me to the brilliance and shining light who was Andy Mazzone. Having read "Progress and Poverty" and struggling to understand its complexities I happened upon HGSSS, its courses and more importantly Andy. For the next couple of years I eagerly commuted from LI thru the worst of winters and warmth of summers to learn and understand economics, social compassion and about life in general from a very special man. Thank you Andy for opening my eyes and enriching my life.

A year ago today, Andrew Mazzone left us. His absence is deeply felt because he was always so much larger than life. Andy's passion for reading, gaining knowledge and advocating for economic justice were surpassed only by his passion for life. He was the absolute embodiment of Frank Sinatra's "I Did it My Way." Andy never did anything in a shy way, which meant he sometimes trod on other people's toes. And, like Frank, Andy "faced it all and stood tall" even as cancer inexorably took his life. I am so thankful for the times we shared. RIP

Andrew -

Your legacy to the Henry George School is amazing. Your 'Smart Talk" page still receives the most 'hits'! Your vision of the new building and the hope of creating a center for Economic thought have already begun to bear fruit. You've left really big shoes to fill.

You will always be sorely missed. It was a life experience to know you and to work with you.

Your friend forever,

Ann

Andy Mazzone was the most intelligent and engaging individual I have ever met. Under all that brilliance was a sweetness that was unexpected. He never let his illness get in the way, never complained and simply kept going. He enriched my life as he did for many others. I shall never forget Andy- a truly unique and wonderful man. My heart goes out to his family.

Andy was always full of life, full of ideas, charismatic and brilliant. I will miss him profoundly. Nothing ever stopped him and there was nothing he couldn't accomplish when he set his mind to it. I am grateful to have known him and to have spoken to him less than two weeks ago.

I will truly miss Andy, mainly because he had an executive grace that I have never met in anybody else. Perhaps I was lucky not be in his crosshairs, but I believe he opened up many doors for me knowing that we shared the same political and economic goals. His friends and colleagues can give him no better tribute than to bring into reality his vision for 2017 - the intellectual breakout of the HGSSS into mainstream politics and economics punditry.

Andy was an amazing guy. I met him when I was a teenager. When I would come over, he would always greet me and treat me with huge amounts of friendship and respect. It was truly a joy to sit around and have conversations with him. I personally liked him very much and feel a solemn pull at my heart hearing that he has passed. I am terribly sorry for your loss. I know there are no words that can cull the feelings that come with loss but know that my heart and thoughts are with you.

February 24, 2017

When Andy asked me, a young 20-something kid to take over Metco's World Wide Pricing, I asked him if he was crazy because I was an Engineer. Andy saw something in me and asked me what I was concern about. I told him I know nothing about business. Andy said "I will teach you everything you need to know. " I asked him about formal business education, i.e. getting my MBA, he said, "pick the school and we will pay for it." Ever week he would call me into his office and I would pick a book from his shelf. Then we would discuss what I read. He had me follow him to many customer and internal meetings and I would (quietly) observe what he was doing and saying. Afterwards, we would discuss the "what and why" of his actions/positions. He taught me to look beyond the small stuff that can be distracting when doing business. He taught me the importance of "reading people" during a negotiation and how to prevent a situation from getting out of control. Andy was my mentor and he kept his promise that he made to me may decades ago. I will never forget him.

Rest in peace Andy and peace to his family

I regret to hear that Andy Mazzone passed away.
When I was at DJK-Metco, I met him twice, once in DJK-Metco office in Tokyo with Tom Fisher
for the annual general meeting of the company, the other in Metco Westbury office with Fumio
to attend the annual sales meeting.
When I met him first time in the Tokyo meeting, he was very nice person to all of us and I was asked
to take him to a bookstore nearby the office where he could look for and buy English books of his like.
Actually he bought a few books in the bookstore.
He was first and only person of our guests who asked for such request.
My impression of him as an avid reader was justified when I saw a lot of books placed in the tall bookshelves
behind his desk in his office.

May he rest in peace.

A terrible loss of both a mentor and friend to so many of us, and to the Georgist community. His work lives on through his video interviews and the changes he brought to the Henry George School.
Andy was that rare businessman who wanted to give something back after a successful career, AND who had the intellectual and knowledge chops to do so in his chosen second career field of economics. His videos are thorough, well-researched and always managed to circle back to Our Solution, even to economists who don't usually see the world through a Georgist lens. They will live on as a legacy and testament to his drive to make the world a better place. Mixing real-world skepticism with a deep core of valuing for human dignity, potential, and ability to learn, he promoted his unique brand of challenging economics, often starting his classes with the question: "If you had a chance to make millions of dollars in just a few years, but you knew you had to do something wrong to do it, but you also knew there was a very low likelihood of your being caught, would you do it?" A better challenge to the amorality and ruthless zeitgeist of our age would be hard to find.

When diagnosed with cancer and told to get his affairs in order, Andy chose instead to try every medical and experimental option available. For years, he fought the disease and continued to be indefatigable. In fact, he liked nothing more than a good battle--but usually against stupidity or injustice. He devoted most of his last years to the Henry George School of Social Science where he was able to doggedly wage a battle against economic and social injustice. Andy's passions also included the written word--no one read more than he--and the City of New York, which enthralled him from the time he was a boy. The only thing larger than his intellect was his dynamic presenceyou always knew when Andy was in the room. Throughout his life, he tried to bring sense and light into the world. He certainly brought a full measure of both into my life, and I will miss him more than words can say.

Andrew Mazzone was a strong influence at Metco. Andy was a smart, easy to talk to human being. He represented the Employees during the 80s with respect and consideration. He will not be forgotten by us. When I spoke with him during the summer of 2016, he sounded well and enjoying his work. My heart is sad. RIP Andy.

Over the last few months I was introduced to and came to love the little Massachussetts boy who read to survive and the man he became, who adored encouraged and protected the writers of books. Despite the utterly unfair, hideous burden of illness/treatment he was the most intensely alive and human person I can imagine.

There are some people in life you just don't forget. Andy is one of those people. His unsurprisingly beautiful and wonderful daughter Dina and I are long-time childhood friends and Andy was an integral part of our lives. He was an amazing 'father away from home' to me, always the first to volunteer or, at the very least, agree after we badgered him enough, to take us places-- and Dina and I didn't fancy close places! ;) Andy was the type of father who completely understood that Dina's and my dreams of potentially meeting New Kids on The Block at their concert obviously took major priory over such a thing as Bio homework. He agreed with Dina's and my collective logic that we simply had to go to the concert, and that Andy needed to buy us seats very close to the front row so they could see us-- after all, we were their potential wives! True to Andy style, he told us we were good enough students, bought us the tickets-- and sent us to the concert in a limo. Having my own children now, I am so grateful and laugh and see how wise a man he was-- intelligent and beyond fun enough to participate in, rather than reprimand, our teenage antics and shenanigans! Andy was a force of good that was very necessary in adolescence. While I haven't seen him in many years now, he was an influence on me while I was growing up-- and a very good one at that. A brilliant and devoted man whom I often think of fondly. My thoughts and prayers are with Andy, Dina and his wonderful family--sending you all hugs of comfort and lots of love. Xoxo, Marg
