I knew Anita, though not well, from the Benedictine Grange, where for years, she served as a model for how to live in this complicated world; not only aging with grace and dignity, but for remaining a passionate and tireless advocate for peace and global harmony until the last moment. She taught me much about being a life-long learner and just the thought of her makes me smile and gives me great courage. I am so grateful for the example of her deep and abiding commitment to her core values and her insatiable curiosity and keen mind. If I could have half her energy and power at 90 I'd be thrilled. What a loss for her family, but also for New Canaan and for all who believe that the UN charter still holds deep wisdom. I offer my condolences to her family and know, too, that her spirit will endure through the ages to instruct and inspire us all.

Anita Houston was the ant who moved the rubber tree plant as in the song "High Hopes". A seemingly insurmountable problem, such as clearing landmines from an entire village, or making progress on reducing nuclear proliferation, was just the challenge that Anita sought. She rallied people and got things done, and made the world better.
