ANN GETTY Obituary

GETTY--Ann G. The Trustees and staff of The Metropolitan Museum of Art mourn the passing of Ann G. Getty, Benefactor, Fellow for Life, and former Trustee. As a Trustee, she was an active member of the Acquisitions Committee, and she served on the Visiting Committees for European Paintings and European Sculpture and Decorative Arts. Ann was a beloved classmate of the East Nicolaus High School Class of 1958. She was always upbeat and had a great sense of humor. She was very un pretentious and loved by all!

My memories of Ann and her wonderful family are as fresh as they were when we were classmates at East Nicolaus High School. She conducted herself with charm, dignity, and also possessed a wonderful sense of deep compassion for others. Ann never one who thought that she was a step above anyone. That sense of humility and grace is what stands out most to this day. She is missed!

Ann Getty was an extraordinary woman and a blessing to her family and friends. Ever seeking and active, she was not satisfied with the status quo, but, like her very active husband, the talented Gordon Getty, developed her own talents and skills. They were quite a pair on the fine arts scene, appreciating and always supporting great quality and fine performances. Ann was so beautiful and graceful and wore such fabulous fashions it was hard to compare her with any other! The touching tributes of Peter and the happy Xmas 1986 on the bare feet of a cat-holding son in a family portrait showed a picture of a happy family together. The adventures she planned were fabulous. I admired her exquisite taste in decor. She and I were both interested in anthropology. I was a studier of behaviors, she dug down in the dirt looking for our ancestors. How like a girl who was raised on a farm! I found her not only decorative but highly substantive. What a hole in the universe she has left, but she is still existing, not on earth perhaps, having shucked her molecular shell, but she has rocketed at the speed of light, electrons coursing far into the universe, to meet her forebears and endure not just for a mortal lifetime, but forever in the cosmos, able to return to earth in a millisecond to continue to monitor, love and protect her loved ones. If you ever want to talk to her, just ask her a question, and see if you don't get an answer! Just thinking of her brings a smile to my face. She was just plain remarkable. We Maddys: Wendy, April and David, all wish all the Getty clan the very best memories of the irreplaceable and illustrious Ann Getty! Kudos, Ann! A life well lived!
