The last seven weeks have been some of the most challenging of my life when I lost one of my best friends and biggest role models on October 29th, 2021. Grandpa, thank you for teaching me to be strong and work hard no matter what life throws at you. Thank you for giving up your lifelong dream of becoming a ship captain, and "sailing the high seas", to find and build a family with a stubborn and loving Irishwoman. I am devastated that you won't be able to see my white coat ceremony or graduation, but I am beyond grateful that you knew about my journey into medicine and were able to see my growth throughout the last several years. When grandma died, one of the very few silver linings was that I was able to get closer with you. From our weekly dinners at Zinburger (where we became fan favorites) to our weekly calls where we were calculating out how close I was to being a doctor, I will always cherish the bond that we formed. I don't think there will be another person in my life who I will be able to talk so easily about sports (and complain about how bad the Mets, Jets, and Giants are), discuss politics/current events, and listen to such incredible life stories that you had. I love you forever and always, Skol (skål)

Grandpa - you are, and you will always be, greatly missed. Thank you for your kindness, love, and height. I will cherish our time together and I will keep your voice, laughter, and love for dogs forever close to my heart.

This is sad news but I'm sure he had a life well-lived. Arne was always a pleasure to work with and be around. He was funny and truly a nice person.

A life well-lived - you will not be forgotten. You and mom created a home for us that was our anchor throughout our lives. I cherish all the memories and now you two are together again. Always - your baby Peg

He passed away suddenly last Friday at the age of 93, exactly as he wanted: quickly and at home. Even though he lived a long life his loss is still heart wrenching to his family. It´s funny, his lifelong dream until the age of 27 was to be a ship´s captain in the Norwegian merchant marines, and one blind date in NYC in the mid 1950s changed his entire life, when he met his match, a spirited Irish American woman, my mother in law Frances. He got married, started working in a dairy in the Bronx while attending college at CUNY, and became an engineer working for Sperrys/Unisys. He was extremely proud of his 3 children and 12 grandchildren, and was lucky enough to be blessed with two great grandchildren. Everywhere I turn in my house I see evidence of his hard work, since he helped me with every major renovation that we did to our home, and never complained as long as we had a few beers to end the day. I could not have done so many things without him, and I am eternally grateful for his guidance and help. I was so lucky to have my own father for many years, and then to have Arne in my life, since he treated me like a son. His last words to me - I love you. So much for the stoic Norwegian. I love you too Dad.

For everything I learned just by listening to you, for the friendship, and for all of the laughter-thank you. Thank you for blessing our lives with your light and your love. Thank you for sharing your stories with us, so that they may live on in our hearts, so that we now know them by heart. Through your memories, you allowed us to journey into the past with you. We were with you every time you set sail, every time you saw grandma on that blind date for the first time, every time you thought about life on that Norwegian farm. To be a part of your life in this way, to share in your past and present, was the greatest gift. Every time I think of you, I see your eyes crinkling at the corner, I hear you say, "in other words," I see Skittles curled at your feet and my heart hurts. In other words, I love you and I cannot begin to express how much I miss you already. Skål.

My first sentence was "pa workin' on boat" and I hope you're on one right now, sailing into the sunset with Grandma. Thanks for being my engineer inspiration: I know I'll always be able to take stuff apart and put it back together since I've watched you do that my whole life. To our strong Norwegian sailor, manga takk, jeg elsker deg, skal!

You are missed so much with each passing day. Your strength, determination, independent spirit and love will live on in all of us each and every day. We love you and wish you were still here with us, but we know a quick exit was what you always wanted. Rest in peace with Mom, we love you both so very much.
