ARTHUR KOPIT Obituary

KOPIT--Arthur. A world-renowned playwright, Arthur spent the past 20 years helping other playwrights find their voices. He was the guiding force behind the Playwrights' Workshop at The Lark, which has launched the careers of many prominent writers in theater and media. Participants range from early-career writers to those who have become well known but want to dig deep again into their own creativity. He gathered writers with different points of view to dispel simplistic ideas of right and wrong and challenge them to be true to their hearts. Arthur traveled frequently on behalf of The Lark. Once, at a lecture in Bucharest, a journalist suggested writers should "write what they know," but Arthur disagreed, insisting that writing comes alive when writers tackle subjects about which they know little, particularly the darker corners of their own experience, especially if they want to learn and grow. Countless playwrights describe Arthur's encouragement. He saw the worth in people and was enthusiastic about what he saw, which changed people's lives and established his legacy as a mentor. The Lark community misses him and extends sympathy to his wife Leslie Garis, children Alex, Ben and Kat; three grandchildren; sister Susan Mann; and many friends.

I met Arthur when we were having premieres of our plays at the amazing Actors Theater of Louisville Humana Festival. His was the thrilling Y2K.I was hired to direct and develop his monumental DISCOVERY OF AMERICA at the Cultural Olympics and went on to workshop it at play labs and direct & produce a production at Theater Emory.I consider his Wings and Indians among the best plays ever.He was insightful, generous, cranky, challenging and a joy to hang out with.I last toasted him in our NYC on St Patty's day.A toast forever.

Arthur Kopit was a mentor and friend. I consider myself fortunate to have spent some time with him, meeting him at The Lark Playwrights Workshop 1. I miss him. He encouraged us all to be fearless and I still carry that with me. Arthur was very funny. Smart. He was also a Yankee fan, but I never held that against him. We both saw them lose to Arizona, watching TV from the street in front of Cancun Mexican Restaurant on 8th Avenue, where the Lark used to be. I tried very hard to suppress my joy at the third out, but Arthur saw through me. I needled him a bit, but went easy as I could see he was really upset. Arthur was a True Fan. And I realized that is what makes him such a great playwright and mentor to all of us fortunate enough to have known him; he was True Fan, not of just the Yankees, but to playwriting, the theatre and all of us.
