BEATRIX HAMBURG Obituary
The Rockefeller University community is deeply saddened by the death of our cherished friend Betty Hamburg, wife of Rockefeller University Trustee Emeritus David Hamburg and mother of former Rockefeller University Trustee Margaret Hamburg. A trailblazer in many areas, Betty paved the way for future generations as the first African-American woman to graduate from Vassar College and Yale Medical School, and as a pioneer in the field of child and adolescent mental health. She leaves an extraordinary legacy through her research on child development, her landmark publications, and her many years of teaching and practicing medicine at some of the nation's most distinguished institutions. A woman of vast intelligence, enormous charm, and great kindness, Betty will be missed by all whose lives she touched. We send our sincere condolences to her beloved husband, David; her children, Margaret and Eric; and her extended family. Dear family, I am so sorry to hear of Betty's passing. She was a generous mentor to me and an inspiration for my own work in adolescent development. From Betty, I learned to look behind stereotypes and to search for the diversity of the experiences that frame our lives. I have always thought of her very fondly and will remember her kindness to me and contributions to adolescent research.
