HAMBURG--Beatrix (Betty),

MD. Extraordinary psychiatrist, researcher, and administrator. Her groundbreaking work on peer counseling and in understanding the effects of stress and various physical illnesses in the lives of children advanced the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at a time when children's mental health was profoundly neglected. Her clinical experience and research on conflict resolution led to her producing a magisterial volume titled "Learning to Live Together: Preventing Hatred and Violence in Child and Adolescent Development" while at Weill Cornell, and to her participation with her husband, Dr. David Hamburg, in creative and original genocide prevention studies. Dr. Betty Hamburg was a Dewitt Wallace Distinguished Scholar at Weill Cornell for 15 years in the Department of Psychiatry, where she profoundly influenced our programs for developmental processes involving the life span, and guided us with her wisdom, judgment, and leadership.
