Brian Carroll Obituary

1948 - 2013
My father, Brian Michael Carroll, passed away on September 14, 2013 at the age of 67. He lived an extraordinary life. He volunteered during Vietnam, and served proudly in the Marine Corps. Upon completion of his tour, he joined the New York City Police Department as an Arms Instructor. During his tenure, he was assigned to many precincts, the most memorable being the 32nd. Brian spent 17 years on the job and later retired as a Lieutenant. After retirement, Brian went on to hold several positions in the private sector. His first position was investigating organized crime in the Fulton Fish Market. Later, he was appointed Chief Investigator for the Mollen Commission. His last post was as Director of Investigations for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

My father told, hands down, the best stories that I have ever heard. I will miss his colorful and artfully told anecdotes of his childhood upbringing. Plus, he was the best father and husband to my mother anyone could ask for. He was one of five brothers that all grew up in a tiny apartment in New York City. He had a crazy sense of adventure and an unending compassion when it came to helping others. I feel blessed that he was able to meet both my husband, and beautiful granddaughter, Lily, before God took him.

Brian is survived by his wife Maura, whom he shared 42 years of marriage with. They were a one of kind couple. In addition to being a loving husband, Brian adored his two special needs daughters, Katie and Tham and supported numerous special needs causes. He is also survived by his eldest daughter, Meghan Arellano, his son-in-law Robert, and his granddaughter Liliana Grace. He will be greatly missed and mourned by many.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in his name to: Puppies Behind Bars, 263 West 38 Street, 4th floor, New York, NY 10018. A wonderful charity that trains service dogs for law enforcement, veterans and the disabled.

Just mentioned Brian a few days ago to some of my Vietnam USMC veterans (of which Brian was also) regarding his role as Chief Investigator of the mid 1990s Mollen Commission investigations of corruption in the NYPD. RIP

In reading what I wrote more than seven years ago upon learning of Brian's passing, the years have done nothing to diminish what I wrote then, nor to erase my fond memories of him. If anything, I appreciate even more his personal courage and integrity and his devotion to family and community. RIP you deserve it.

In 1995, I headed a NYC based organization, the Concern Alliance for Professional Policing that presented Brian Carroll with a public service award for his efforts fighting police corruption. This is only one small chapter in the life of a very special and loving man. May he rest in peace and may his family find comfort in knowing that he lived a rich and giving life. Semper fi

I had the pleasure of meeting Brian and working with him when I had two of his daughters in my classroom for several years. He was always generous with his compliments and clearly adored his family. I also worked with him on volunteer projects and he was very generous with his time. He had a terrific sense of humor and great sense of adventure. I'll miss you Brian. Sending prayers for God's blessings on you and your family.
