BRUCE WROBEL Obituary

WROBEL--Bruce James, 56, of NYC passed away on December 10, 2013. Bruce was born in Chicago, IL on July 5, 1957 to his beloved parents, Virginia I Wrobel and the late Walter J Wrobel. After a very successful academic and athletic career at Evergreen Park High School in Evergreen Park, IL, Bruce went on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he developed his passion for energy development, drove the establishment of a varsity football team after a 70-year hiatus, and formed many treasured and lifelong friendships. After receiving degrees in economics and resource management, Bruce cofounded MITEX Corporation, a hydropower company later sold to Sithe Energies. As a Sithe Energies executive and eventual Sithe Global Power CEO, Bruce was responsible for the identification and development of dozens of power plants throughout the world. Power plant development eventually took him to Africa where he fell in love with the people and became committed to addressing many of the challenges preventing African nations from overcoming poverty. Whether building power plants to deliver reliable energy and much needed jobs (SITHE GLOBAL), laying fiber optic cable on the ocean floor to enable global connectivity and access (SEACOM), or helping nations realize the full value of their natural resources (GAPCO), Bruce envisioned real solutions and worked tirelessly to secure the required funding and manage the projects through to completion. Always a generous and giving man, Bruce formalized his philanthropy through many charitable organizations, including his own All for Africa, with school construction and education being his favored focus. He was fueled by the joy on student's faces when able to receive their education in a real school environment for the first time. Bruce is survived by his greatest assets -- his loving mother Virginia (Evergreen Park, IL), his once wife and now dear friend Marlo Marron, his beloved children, Dylan and Summer, his wonderful siblings Dawn (Bob Mason) of Beecher, IL, Walter (Susan) of Houston, TX, and Sandra (Robbie Robinson) of Redwood City, CA, his six handsome nephews, and a world full of cherished friends and respected colleagues. For those wishing to continue Bruce's legacy, donations in his memory can be made to the Bruce Wrobel Memorial Foundation.

July 22, 2025

Sending sincere condolences and prayers to Bruce's Mom, Wife, Children and Family. My name is Ray (Rayon) Thomas, Bruce's little Brother through the Big Brother Program. I was in the 6th grade when we were matched and what a match it was! We had so much in common from being Athletes (Football, Baseball, Basketball, to Wrestling) and just our characteristics. He was the Big Brother I always wanted to have, and color had nothing (He, Caucasian and I Jamaican American). We were two peas in a pod! He taught me so much and showed me what a "Real Gentleman" was and how to carry yourself. He was the Quarterback of the M.I.T. Engineers Football Club (#10) and he worked it out for me to be the Team Manager. I remember getting my M.I.T. Blue Team Jacket with my name Rayon #10. I wore the number 10 when I played Quarterback Freshman year at Cambridge Rindge & Latin High School. He was my "Role Model" He exposed this young Inner-City kid to so many different experiences. From traveling with the Football Club on away games and interacting and having conversations with the other players and coaches. It truly broadened my horizons! He and his good Friend Al had a little Sandwich Shop on campus, and he taught me how to run the register and make sandwiches. It was my first foray into the world of entrepreneurship/business. He and Al took me and my Friend Albert Coipel camping and fishing in the mountains (Don't recall if it was in MA, or NH or Maine). We had a great time; I fell into the stream where we were fishing as the rocks were slippery! Bruce would come to Cambridge to pick me up in his Datsun B310 (Hatchback Two-Door) and take me to various events. My family loved him and loved him more! He was a Blessing!! He told me that one day I would have the attention of many people as he felt I was a great speaker. I have been a Broadcaster for 42 years since 1983 and Professional PA Announcer and CEO of my own Consultancy Company. He was right! I miss you Big Bro and may the Lord continue to keep You. Rest Easy and continued Love

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Bruce's passing. He was a great man, MIT Wrestling teammate, and friend. My deepest sympathy to his family. Bruce taught me how to be a better wrestler, teammate, and man. The world has lost a great visionary and humanist.
I will never forget the great MIT Wrestling season of 1978-79, which Bruce Co-Captained with Gary Spletter, and Bob Crozier, Chris Capelli, Hoyt Davidson, and I rounded out the upper weights. The first match of the season was a close one, in which both Bruce and I would have to win in order for the MIT team to win. Before his match at 193lbs, Bruce bet me a milkshake that “I can beat my guy better than you can beat yours” with me wrestling last at HWT. We each won that day, and continued to bet each other a milkshake at each match after that for the rest of the season, in which each of us went nearly undefeated, and which was a winning one for the team as a whole. Though my season was cut short by a shoulder injury, by seasons' end, we had broken even with our betting, and at a team dinner at 20 Chimneys, passed a single milkshake back-and-forth across the table ten times! I hope Bruce is now enjoying the milkshakes in heaven. Rest in peace my friend.

We met during an All for Africa event in NYC. I told him about a friends project in Papua and he agreed to meet to discuss further. I was deeply inspired by his insights and advice. What a awesome person. We will never forget you Bruce.

As one of the hundreds who got a chance to play football at MIT because of Bruce's generosity, I join in mourning his passing. While I love that he had a passion for the fun of the girdiron, I appreciate him all the more because of passionate support of people a continent away. An athlete, a scholar, a giving man what more could one aspire to be? My condolences to the family. Know that others will follow the path that his spirit lit and make the world a better place.

Just came from the memorial mass of another friend who graduated with Bruce- Ed West. Bruce was always a great person to be around in high school. Sorry to hear of his passing. Hearing of his accomplishments makes me feel very lucky to have known him. The world has lost a great man.

Dear Ginny, Dylan, Summer and Wrobel Family,
Bill, Matthew and I would like to extend our deepest sympathy for your loss. While Bruce will obviously be missed on a worldwide level, it does not compare to how much he will be missed by all of you. The example he gave by the way he lived his life is something for everyone to aspire to. While it will not be of much consolation at this sad time, most people never know anyone like Bruce their entire lives. You all have been directly related to him and known the joy of his company. With time, we hope you will be able to remember that feeling and less of what you feel now.
