CHARLES BERKMAN Obituary

BERKMAN--Charles, July 2, 1928 - November 18, 2022. Beloved husband of the late Judith Cossin Berkman, and beloved father of Meredith Berkman (Daniel Mintz); Marna Berkman Tolchin (Robert Tolchin); and Johanna Berkman (Emanuel Weintraub). Adored grandfather of Noa, Caleb, Avital, Yael; Morielle (Akiva), Amalya (Benjamin), Ezri, Yehudit, Serah, Mekimi; Moses, Judy, and Nathaniel. A Coney Island boy, and the youngest of seven children born to Morris and Minnie, Charlie worked days in his father's junkyard, attending both Brooklyn College and Brooklyn Law School at night. A gifted litigator who was active in Brooklyn Democratic politics, he served as a New York City Tax Commissioner during the Beame and Koch administrations. A proud, lifelong Zionist, Charlie visited Israel for the first time in 1956, returning many times throughout his life, serving with Volunteers for Israel at the age of 78 during the Second Lebanon War. May his memory always be for a blessing - and may the tribe of which he was fiercely proud continue to increase.

In 2005 I retained Mr Charles Berkman. This man had to be one of the best attorneys ever. Seeing him in court was something beautiful. A true professional. Even at over 77 years of age he had the mind if a legal scholar. Nothing short of pure genius. I observed how he would advise young people on the importance of a good education. No matter what income level you were at,he treated people like royalty.

I retained Mr. Berkman back in 2004 and he was 75 years of age, but he had more life in him than anyone else in the office. He certainly didn't look his age, and he had the energy of someone half his age. Rest In Peace, sir. You were fabulous!
