CHARLIE MOSS Obituary

MOSS--Charlie. Of Manhattan, died August 5th in Wainscott, New York. Son of Samuel Moskowitz and Celia Liebes. He was married to Susan Calhoun for 47 years. He was father of Robbie (deceased 2003), Mary, and Sam. Actor, writer, golfer, ventriloquist. Executive Creative Director and President of Wells, Rich, Greene. Charlie created many iconic campaigns that became a part of the American vernacular such as: New York State's I Love New York (for which he won a special Tony Award), Braniff's The End of the Plain Plane, Bic's Flick Your Bic, Alka-Seltzer's Plop Plop Fizz Fizz, Ford's Quality is Job One and Hertz's Not Exactly. After creating his own agency Moss/Dragoti with his long term partner, Stan Dragoti, he retired to pursue a career in acting that began at age 11 when cast in the movie Little Fugitive. Charlie was a member of The Amateur Comedy Club of Manhattan, The Georgica Association, East Hampton Golf Club, and originator of the Poxabogue Golf Invitational. He never stopped creating. When Charlie died, Susan was holding his hand.

Of course Susan was holding his hand. Charlie was my beloved boss in 1981ish. Falling down a rabbit hole, watching Ina Garten and Juliana Margulies led me here today. You and Charlie were a real love story, Susan. My love to you and your family. I have always remembered your birthday/anniversary in March and will do so with special prayers this year. Charlie will forever be in my heart.

When Charlie retired from his incredible career in advertising, he returned to his passion for acting. Lucky for me, he found my acting studio and my class. This was in the early days of building my business and it was important that I do so with integrity and I called on Charlie endless times to help me discover ways to send that message and create a place that was true to that mission.
Selflessly and with love he gave freely.
He was always, and ever will be in my heart, a true mensch.
p.s.: he was a very good actor!

The two most creative artists I ever knew were Minor White and Charlie Moss. Very different personalities and bodies of work, yet ironically, I thought, they are spitting images of one another. I knew Charlie from the ACC. He was a compassionate man - and actor. On stage, his comedic performances and timing were brilliant. I will miss him.

Although I only met Charlie once at a Cousins Club event (we were third cousins) when we were kids, I followed his career over the years and was so proud to be part of his family. My prayers are with you all at this time.

Charlie was a treasured friend and acting mentor at the ACC. I was fortunate to be in 3 shows with him. We were both "early birds" at rehearsals and shared dinners together as we went over our lines. His advice and insights on how to best portray the role at hand were generous and spot on. I shall miss him terribly. He was the best!! Much love to Susan at the kids.

Thank you Uncle Charlie for being you and all you did for the family. Love you and miss you Aunt Susan. Except for letting me watch American Werewolf in London when I was 7, don´t think I slept that Christmas.

I was a producer at Doyle Dane when Charlie was hired as a jr.copyrighter working on Avis. We did a radio commercial that won an award a first of many more to come.

I am saddened by the loss of my friend and ACC clubbie, Charlie. His acting was joyful and his characters full of presence. He was a simple man whose intelligence and creativity made him a rare and extraordinary person. He had a gift of making those around him believe in their own creative potential.
And what a life he lived in New York City!
To Susan and his beloved children, I send my heartfelt condolences. Charlie´s love for you was evident in everything he did.

Charlie compelled an enthusiasm for possibilities and a respect for limits which is a tough zany-sane thing to pull off. If you were lucky enough to have seen him performing Lady Bracknell at the ACC, you got a hint of his wonderfully stoic and hilariously droll command of mirth. Our stage has lost a radiant presence. Deepest condolences to Susan and family.

I was so sorry to learn about Charlie's recent passing, and send my deepest condolences to Susan, his children and his family.
Charlie had a pivotal role in my parent's film "Little Fugitive," and I think of him everytime I see the film. I have fond memories from whenever he would attend screenings, and various events. We happened to have a screening in Tompkins Square Park on August 5th the day he passed away...
Warmest regards, Mary Engel - [email protected]
