CLARK MURRAY

MURRAY--Clark Compton, born September 17, 1937, the American sculptor and painter, died peacefully at home in upstate New York on October 29, 2022. He rose to prominence in Los Angeles in the mid-1960s as part of the Minimalist art movement, with shaped wall-mounted works that were as tough minded and precise as their maker. Moving to the east coast, he became known for large steel pipe constructions, unpainted or painted in monochrome and often positioned outdoors. In the 1980s he left New York City, learning to sail and crossing the Atlantic several times. In his 80s he built himself, from scratch and by hand, an immaculate 12ft wooden sailing skiff. In 2019 he was predeceased by Emily Harding, his beloved wife and partner of more than 40 years. They shared a wry sense of humor. Rest in Peace dear Clark.
