CLIVE CHAJET Obituary

CHAJET--Clive. Died peacefully at home at age 83, on February 3rd, from complications due to dementia. Clive was exceptionally charming, witty, generous, loving, and the kindest of men. An eternal optimist, he was grateful for the friends he loved, his work, Judaism, his tennis game, and, most of all, his family. He was beloved by those who knew him for his generosity of spirit, enthusiasm for life, ever-present sense of humor, and the delight he took in connecting with everyone around him. Born February 27th, 1937 in London, England, Clive immigrated to America in 1950 with his parents Henry and Anne Chajet, and his brother Barry, settling in New York City. Having survived the Blitz in London as a young child and acutely aware of the relatives he had lost in the Holocaust, Clive remained enthusiastically appreciative of his adopted country throughout his life. A graduate of Columbia University in 1959, Clive built an enormously successful career in brand identity and image management, founding Chajet Design Company and then becoming Chairman and CEO of Lippincott & Margulies. Married for 53 years to Bonnie Loeb Chajet, Clive adored her and his two daughters Lisa and Lori. He dedicated the book he authored, "Image by Design," to "The heart and soul of my identity: Bonnie, Lisa, Lori." The core of Clive's soul was his love for people, which continued to radiate even to the end of his battle with dementia. Clive is survived by his beloved wife Bonnie, his daughters Lisa and Lori Chajet, his nephew Jonathan Chajet, his son-in-law Benjamin Wides, and his grandchildren Sonia, Sasha, and Emmanuel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Clive's honor to Park Avenue Synagogue or Columbia University. Condolences may be sent to [email protected] Due to COVID-19, there will be a private graveside funeral and shiva via Zoom - details by email. The family thanks Claude Bocque and Betty Domfeh for their devotion and incredible care.

Dale & I loved sitting with Clive at our annual Christmas dinner, even in the last years when dementia was setting in. I loved to play golf with him at Banyan even though he was a terrible golfer. I loved the story about freaking out his roommates at Hackley School by getting up and laying tefillin. He made me laugh with his stories about doing business with my Uncle Alvin when he sold packaging in the 1960s. I loved his book. Clive was simply a delight and we will very much miss him.
