CYNTHIA BERMAN Obituary
BERMAN--Cynthia, died peacefully at her home on June 25, 2025, with her family by her side. She was 94 years old. Cynthia was born on August 29, 1930 in New York City, to the late Sadie (Sutzman) and Irving Berman. She was brought up in Queens along with her older brother, Jerome, a veteran of WWII who predeceased her. After high school, one of Cynthia's earliest jobs was as a secretary at a photography school. While working there, Cynthia discovered a love for, and her talent at, photography. From then on, she was the family photographer who documented birthdays, holidays, and her family's tradition of three generations eating dinner together every Sunday night. In 1964 Cynthia met Howard Baker and thus began combining her life with his. They were amongst the first wave of tenants in the Mitchell Lama development, East Midtown Plaza, and resided there together for fifty years. Howard and Cynthia shared many interests, among them seeing theater both on and off Broadway where they caught the original casts of most of the top shows of the past half-century. They also began a ski group, renting buses out of Manhattan to take them and a selection of friends up to Vermont for ski weekends. They were founding members of Miramar Ski Club, which is still in existence today. Cynthia worked for many years as an Executive Secretary at the Glemby Company and retired from there after a successful career. She enjoyed the fact that she could walk to work most days, and she always set a striking silhouette with her bright red hair, tall frame, and exquisite fashion sense. Her family is going to miss their frequent visits with her that always included long talkative lunches and dinners. It seemed wherever she took us to eat, she was adored by all who worked there. Her nieces, Elizabeth and Ilene, and her nephew Mitchell will miss their daily phone calls with her, which were always a daily highlight. Cynthia leaves behind many lifelong friends who will miss their conversations with her very much. Cynthia was predeceased by her beloved Howard Baker in 2011. She is survived by her niece Ilene Hamilton and her husband Brian of Nevada, along with their children Alexi and Jaron; her nephew Brad Berman and wife Mary of Florida; her nephew Daniel Baker and his partner Erin Shea from Vermont, along with their children Hattie, and Phoebe, as well as Erin's daughters Isabella and Maya; niece Elizabeth Atwood and her husband Bill of Massachusetts, along with their children, Olivia, Emeline, and Jacob; and her nephew Mitchell Baker and his husband Thom Egan, of Massachusetts. Service will take place at Riverside Chapel, New York City at 11:30am on Sunday, June 29, 2025, followed by burial at Wellwood Beth Moses Cemetery, in West Babylon, NY.
