DANIEL MORIARTY Obituary

MORIARTY--Daniel John, born September 1, 1941 in New York City, died at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after a brave battle with AML. A graduate of The Dwight School and Georgetown University, Dan began Groovies Movies while in college and was a publicist for The Shadows nightclub in Washington, DC. He returned to New York to represent, among others, The Lovin' Spoonful, Richie Havens and Buffy St. Marie. Dan went on to a distinguished career in senior executive positions at Norton Simon, Inc., Revlon, Max Factor, Christian Dior, LVMH, Large Scale Biology Corp. among others, and most recently, until his retirement, at APLA. Unfailingly generous and loving with his time, wisdom, humor and friendship to family, friends, and colleagues, Dan served on the boards of educational, charitable and business not-for-profit organizations and was an avid world traveler. After the death of his parents Jane G. and Mortimer D., Dan became the beloved patriarch of his family. He is survived by his brothers and sisters Mortimer, Kevin, Margaret, Michael, John and Jane and their spouses, nine nieces and nephews, three great-nephews and his dearest friend Thomas McCauley. The family will be receiving April 7 from 6-9 at Frank E. Campbell, 1076 Madison Avenue. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Ignatius Loyola Church, 980 Park Avenue at 84th Street on April 8 at 10am. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to: Rosary Hill Home, 600 Linda Ave., Hawthorne, NY 10532.

Dan was my boss and mentor at Revlon. But more than that he was an extraordinary friend and his death has affected me more deeply than I at first realized.

As a senior VP of a major $2 billion-plus corporation Dan possessed power in the worldly sense to be sure. But he also had a deeper more spiritually-based power and that was the ability to influence people in a profoundly positive way. I am one of those fortunates whose life was transformed by knowing Dan. I admired him for his inner strength; the self-mastery he achieved was such a desirable quality that I strove to be like him. I will never forget Dan Moriarty and I thank our Creator for bestowing on me the privilege of knowing his care and friendship.

Yes, Dan indeed was "unfailingly generous" -- a very special person. We met him in California through our good friend, Tom McCauley. In past years Dan frequently loaned us his lovely NYC apartment when we needed to be there for certain family occasions. We never met other members of his family but he certainly showed us lots of photos of the family he was so very proud of. Our deepest condolences on your loss.
