DAVID ANDREWS Obituary

ANDREWS--Dr. David L.

The Board and staff of The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) are deeply saddened by the death of our esteemed Trustee Emeritus, David L. Andrews, M.D. A retired orthopedic surgeon with a passion for gardening, he was a well-respected figure in medical, philanthropic, and horticultural circles. David had extensive knowledge of the Botanical Garden's living collections and was a long-term member of the Horticulture Committee, as well as Chairman of the Library Visiting Committee. He was well-known for his very important rare book collection focused on American botany, horticulture, and agriculture. The collection was shown at NYBG in 2003 in an exhibition entitled, "America's Cornucopia: A Collector's View of American Botany and Horticulture." Most of this vast assemblage has been generously given to the Garden's LuEsther T. Mertz Library. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Nancy, and his children and grandchildren. Though he´s been go e awhile now, my husband and I were remembering dear Dr. Andrews today. We called him our family orthopedic surgeon since he did many procedures between myself, my husband and my Mom. Not only was he a remarkable surgeon but I just loved the man himself and would have treasured the opportunity to lnow him beyond his medical practice. I just like him as a person. The world is a better place because he was in it. Our heartfelt condolences to all his family and friends. Thank you for sharing him with us.

My cousin David was as close as a brother during my early years when I lived in Shaker Heights. Our Moms were sisters and the four of us spent much time together. Those were good times.

Dr Andrew’s trained me at New York Orthopaedic Hospital at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center 1977-1980

He was a fascinating, approachable , incisive, practical, common sense, friendly man. I learned much from him not only about surgery but we shared our love for gardening. I continue both those practices today.

I am 70, was thinking of him today for some reason.

Said a pray and well wishes to him.

David and I were cousins, born two weeks apart. We were together nearly every day from age 4 to 10 and attended the same school. Later, David would tell me I interesting facts that he had learned, about astronomy especially, as we roamed the grandparents’ farm where I then lived. I look back and see the formation of my bright and interesting cousin, always a favorite.

Dr Andrews was my savior, after fracturing my neck in pool accident in the summer of 1974 he fused my 4th and 5th vertebrae with stainless steel and bone from my hip. I am presently 58 years old and have very minor issues with my neck due to his great talent. We were told he had done this same operation 100 times before me. I was truly blessed to find him, I know he is in heaven, for he was my guardian angel on earth.

It is sad to say Farewell to my cousin David. Only two weeks older than I, he was my first, and longest best friend. It may be sad to say goodbye, but the many memories I treasure from our times together bring happy thoughts of a fine person.
Sending love to all his family from Mikie

David Andrews was the consummate professional, mentor, and educator. He inspired innumerable orthopedic surgeons to think outside the box, take incredible care of patients, and mostly to be humane. He will be sadly missed by all.

Dear Lynnwood - I am so sorry to learn of the death of your father. I have a very clear memory of him in college and our dinner together at the Deerfield Inn the night before our Mount Holyoke graduation. I also consulted him on a medical issue - my troublesome foot - some years after graduation. He was such a kind and capable doctor.
The loss of a parent brings a special sadness. My father passed away a year ago and I still miss him every day. So my heart goes out to you and your whole family. Much love - Maureen
