David Leventhal Obituary

LEVENTHAL--David, born in Brooklyn, NY, on October 16, 1918, died peacefully in Manhattan on December 25, 2007 at 89. Beloved and revered husband of Elizabeth and Barbara (deceased), kindred spirit of brother Harold (deceased), devoted father of Robert (Janet) Leventhal of Charlottesville, VA, loving grandfather of Chelsea and Alethea Leventhal and wonderful step-grandfather to Miran (James) Perkins of Arlington, VA. A 1939 graduate of Syracuse University, an Army Air Force flight instructor during WWII and a pilot for TWA after the war, a businessman and an intelligently selective investor. He is also survived by his daughter Susan Rome of Boston, MA, son John Leventhal of Boulder, CO, and grandsons Justin and Matthew Rome. He loved his family, to travel, and to laugh, host and entertain. He will be deeply missed by all of those who he touched with his warmth, sense of humor and generosity, among them his mother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces, and most especially his housekeeper of 30 years, Martha Spada, who loved and respected him, and was part of his extended family. Funeral services will be held Friday, 11am, at Frank E. Campbell, 1078 Madison Ave at 81st St. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Jewish Home for the Aged, 120 West 106 St, NY, NY 10025.

David and Liz came to Greenwich, CT many summers and we had some lovely afternoons and evenings together. Though we first met on a business basis all quickly blossomed into a personal friendship. How I miss that funny person with his quips and his storehouse of information. You are thought of often, David, and when Liz and I have lunch there is so much reminiscing. It is unquestioned that you were a person that was loved and respected by everyone.

David was a wonderful person whose gentility and intellect spanned several cultures and continents. His departure is a heartfelt loss to the many people whose lives he briefly touched - outside of his extended family.

At times like these, finding the right words is not easy. Some people are larger than life and David was one of them. We have such wonderful memories of him filled with fun and laughs that we will miss him always. Memories like these keep him alive.

Though we are miles apart, we want you to know that we are thinking of you in sorrow and sympathy. We’ll remember David in our prayers.
