DAVID LINDAU Obituary

LINDAU--David Steuer, former managing partner of the New York law firm Holtzmann, Wise and Shepard; advisor to numerous charitable institutions; and moral compass for many, died at his home in Sleepy Hollow on Saturday. He was 87. Mr. Lindau was a labor lawyer who represented a broad range of clients including Allen & Company, the New York Daily News, and Syntex. He practiced law for more than 40 years. Mr. Lindau was born in New York, received a BA from Swarthmore College, and a law degree from Yale Law School. Mr. Lindau is survived by his three children Dan Lindau (Jane) and Maggie Nielsen, both of Chappaqua, and Peter Lindau (Stacy) of Chicago; a sister, Jackie Marlin of Washington, DC; and eight grandchildren. His marriage to Josie Grossman Lindau ended with her death in 2008. A fierce lifelong defender of equal rights, David Lindau served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services; on the Executive Board of the Legal Defense Fund of the N.A.A.C.P.; as President of the Board of Education of Hawthorne Cedar Knolls; and as member of and contributor to countless other human rights, justice, and arts-related causes. Equally passionate about his family, he counseled and guided his children and grandchildren to engage in pursuits that served the greater good. Perhaps the only views of his that wavered were those regarding New York sports teams. He went with the winners.

DAVID WAS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FRIENDS AT kENDAL. HE WAS CARING AND LOVING AND WAS SUCH A GREAT
PARTNER TO HIS WIFE, WHO PASSED BEFORE HIM. DAVID, IN BETTER DAYS MADE ME LAUGH AND ALWAYS HAD SUCH A STRONG GENTLEMAN WAY ABOUT HIM. I HAVE MISSED HIM A GREAT DEAL AND THINK OF HIM OFTEN AND ALSO TALK WITH MANY OF HIS FRIENDS AT KENDAL, MAY THEY BOTH BE RESTING IN PEACE AND MAY ALL YOUR GREAT MEMORIES OF BOTH PARENTS KEEP YOU SMILING.

David was a gracious gentleman with a sly sense of humor and truly concerned for the marginalized among us.

David was a good man, a wonderful generous law partner at Holtzmann, Wise & Shepard and probably the best legal writer I ever encountered. I have fond memories of him and send my condolences to his family.
