I am just now learning about the life of David Rakoff because This American Life is doing an hour-long program on his life and death. I generally not able to listen to TAL and I am grateful that I am listening to it today.

I never met David, but I'm reading "Half Empty" in his honour. So proud he's Canadian. A huge loss for our country.

I read Don't Get Too Comfortable several years ago. I never knew David, but when I heard he had died, I went on amazon and bought his 2 other books. He wrote that when his therapist died, he grieved for someone who about whom he knew very little. I am a therapist, and I am luckier. I know something of David through his writings. Here I am online again reading about him and seeing him in what are now, timeless, videos. It would be presumptions to say that I "know" David now, but his essays have given me deeper knowledge of myself. I cannot imagine how much those of you who actually knew him in person loved him. Hey......

He wrote, he spoke, he shared his soul.
His death, our loss, we dare console?
His ryhme, his words, his voice and wit. How does one even dare to submit homage, a eulogy, a story, a time when listening in and hearing his rhmye was remarkable, breathtaking, laugh-out-loud fun? Thank you, David, for all that you've done.

Dear people who also loved David's work, it is not right that he is no more. Thankful though for what he told me via his work. Another David, The Netherlands.

We never had the good fortune to meet David, but to read him was, in a very real sense, to meet him. What a wonderful, unique voice the world has lost.

I did not see you close your eyes,
Or hear your last faint sigh,
I only heard that you were gone,
No time to say goodbye.
I will miss you dearest. Rest in Peace.

Leith and I want to express our deepest regret to the whole family. There is real injustice to end a productive life at 47 but real accomplishment in what David did.

David and I shared a few youthful years in the sun as teenagers at Forest Hill Collegiate in Toronto. Our friendship was built on a common foundation - two outsiders observing the humour and oddities of teenage life. Years later I learned that David built a successful career with his power of observation. I hoped we could connect again someday and share a few memories and laughs ... but it was not to be. I will always remember you with a smile my friend....RIP.
