DAWN GREENE Obituary

GREENE--Dawn M. President and CEO of the Jerome L. Greene Foundation, died at home in her apartment at the Carlyle Hotel on August 30, 2010. A native New Yorker born April 8, 1922, she was 88 years old. The cause of death was congestive heart failure. Mrs. Greene, an avid theatergoer and arts patron, continued a long tradition of philanthropy in education, arts, and medicine begun by Jerome L. Greene, her late husband, who created endowed scholarships at the Juilliard School and at Columbia Law School and was a benefactor of Channel 13, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Jewish Museum, the Mostly Mozart Festival, and Montefiore Medical Center (The Jerome L. and Dawn Greene Medical Arts Pavilion and Children's Hospital). Mrs. Greene continued her late husband's legacy with continued support of these outstanding institutions and took new exciting initiatives in his name in support of the American Cancer Society (Hope Lodge), Calvary, WNYC, WQXR, and the Yale School of Drama. She made the lead grant of $250 million in support of the Jerome L. Greene Science Center at Columbia University, which will be the first building by Renzo Piano on the new Manhattanville campus. Mrs. Greene, a graduate of Fordham University in sociology with a Masters in Social Work, completed clinical counseling work at the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health. She served on the boards of Planned Parenthood of New York City and Inwood House and received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Columbia University in 2008. She is survived by her daughter, Christina McInerney, and her granddaughter, Margaret Williams.

Dawn was a very dear and amazing friend. We spent the last couple years together sitting in Central Park chatting for hours about our lives and wonderful memories, dining together in many favorite upper East side restaurants, and attending cultural events. She will be sadly missed. My deepest sympathy to her family. Lydia Hirsch
