EDDIE PALMIERI Obituary

PALMIERI--Eddie. The trustees and staff of El Museo del Barrio mourn the passing of Eddie Palmieri, legendary musician and cultural icon, and beloved father of El Museo trustee Gabriela Palmieri. A virtuoso pianist and composer, and also a fierce advocate for Latino arts and culture, he blazed a trail from the early 1960s that empowered generations of artists, musicians, and cultural institutions. In 2019, he honored El Museo with a powerful performance at the celebration of the historic reopening of our Teatro. We extend our deepest condolences to Gabriela and the entire Palmieri family. EDDIE PALMIERI was a life force. While his vast musical legacy will be celebrated for years to come, if he loved anything more than music it was people. His love of life was contagious and intoxicating in conversation and from his piano. His was a captivating presence, warmly personable while always self assured.
Eddie loved New York. And he knew the history of the music. He knew where it came from and knew where he spent his life taking it. He could regale you with his vivid memories of how Afro Cuban music evolved in El Barrio before spreading across New York´s five boroughs. I´ve seen Eddie and his orchestras perform in California, Minneapolis and Paris but nothing matched a Palmieri gig in a New York club with a packed dance floor when he challenged his band to wear them out.
More than an accomplished musician and composer, El Maestro was a true band leader in the traditional sense. His driving, rhythmic piano had an uncanny ability to coalesce groups of identifiably unique, all star musicians that bled chops into an orchestra that sounded like an all- powerful single being with multiple appendages.
Palmieri´s tried and true repertoire never grew old nor did the exuberance with which he approached the compositions he had played thousands of times. His audience never tired of them because he never tired of them. And if he did, he found new musicians to challenge him and keep his arrangements fresh. There was never any going-through-the-motions on a Palmieri bandstand.
Seldom a day goes by without me listening to some Eddie, but it´s Eddie the man I already miss. He was the last of a breed, a New Yorker who grew up playing stickball and helping his family behind the soda fountain in what was called a "candy store" before they became "bodegas". He refined his craft in the dozens of clubs, dance halls and ballrooms that were accessible to young enterprising artists in the 1950´s and 1960´s. His music was a ferocious brand of aggressive ambition that coincided with, and often spoke to, the cultural and political history of his art form, his people and the city he loved.
There will never be another Eddie Palmieri. There can´t be another Eddie Palmieri. But a soul like Eddie Palmieri´s lives on for eternity.
