EDNA NELKIN Obituary

NELKIN--Edna (Rubenstein),

well known jewelry designer and retailer born in 1920, died March 30, 2018. She was predeceased by Morton Nelkin, her husband of 66 years. Her career spanned 30 years, both in Brooklyn and later on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. Her creativity spanned many areas of crafts, including painting and stitchery design. She had written four books, a book of poems, and created a film, all of which are in the YIVO archives for Jewish research. Her book Come Sit Beside Me, was a memoir reflecting her rich and diverse life. Her writings were included in the University of Oregon Press for literature in retirement in 2004-2005, and she was a paid correspondent for the Miami Herald. She was her family's historian and archivist, having created two major reunions with several hundred members attending from all parts of the world. She leaves her sons, David of Eugene, Oregon and James of the Bronx, daughters-in-law, Andrea and Linda, grandchildren, Matthew (Desiree Miller) and Sarah (Anthony Medrano), and great-grandchildren, Noah and Lucas. She created a heritage weekend for her mother's scattered family members in 1982; this observance continues today as outstanding generational gatherings, thanks to her family leadership. She cared for the planet, supporting it with her mini-philanthropies - hunger, women's issues, equality and ethics; a passion for the right thing was the core of her life, trying to fix the world never ended. She was a sharer of whatever she wanted you to taste, to touch, to have, whether she had it, painted it, wove it, cooked it or wore it. She was a writer of books with her heartbeat on every page. Every project she undertook was totally all giving and formed with passion. She lived in love with life. Services Tuesday 11:30am at "The Riverside", 76th St. and Amsterdam Ave.`

Edna and her sister were cousins of my mother Vivian Spector Poster. I didnt live near Edna but met her many times when I was younger going to family affairs in Chicago and New York. I attended one of her amazing reunions with my husband and my children who were young at that time. The birthday cards that she NEVER forgot to send were an amazing testament to her thoughtful and caring nature. She touched the lives of my husband and children with her love and Hugs valediction.
Her organizational skills were amazing....I have no doubt that she is already getting a major reunion together with all of the family in heaven. Love and hugs to you one last time Edna.

My condolences to Edna's family! Edna and her friends spent many hours in my bead shop in Mendon, VT. She was an inspiration to me! I learned a lot by simply working on the fabulous necklace of her design made of jade leaves, etc. I haven't seen her in some time but she is quite alive in my memories of her.

What a fabulous lady. She taught me about art, and enabled me to have jewelry which I can give to my grand daughters and beautiful gifts that are still stored in their original packaging so I can never have a holiday without seeing her name.So saddened by her passing but so happy that she lived such a long and fruitful life. Sympathies to all from all.

Dear Edna: you took me into the family from the first day I met you. Your warm smile and laughing eyes were so welcoming I had no choice but to love you from that day on. I looked forward to every birthday card and anniversary card you never failed to send, & always with a personal note. We are all a closer family because of your family reunions. The hand with the crossed fingers will always remind me of aunt Edna and I wear it today in honor of you and your importance to our family.

Nothing can extinguish the light with which she illuminates so many parts of my life. She told me often, including when I last saw her on March 25th, that she had "missed nothing." She had seen it, done it, shared it, embraced it and in every measure savored it. What a woman, the likes of whom will not be seen so soon again. Your light shines in me and I hope I can do it proud.

So many things in life have an impact. Edna was the source of many of the most impactful moments in my and my family's lives. We adored her, were grateful to her and tried to measure up to her glorious expectations of us. We'll never, ever forget her which will make her immortal. She deserves it.
