EDWARD BOTTONE Obituary

BOTTONE--Edward Joseph, PhD. It is with tremendous sorrow that we note the passing of our esteemed colleague, Dr. Edward Joseph Bottone. A member of the Mount Sinai Health System community for more than 50 years, Dr. Bottone began as a junior technician at The Mount Sinai Hospital and, in the decades succeeding, rose to Director of the Department of Microbiology for the Hospital. Dr. Bottone was a renowned clinical microbiologist who published more than 208 peer-reviewed manuscripts and contributed to major scientific and clinical journals. He authored six books, including An Atlas of Clinical Microbiology of Infectious Diseases Volumes 1 and 2, which is an essential microbiology textbook. In addition to his clinical and editorial work, Dr. Bottone was a beloved mentor and teacher to countless students and colleagues. His industriousness earned him the Jacobi Medallion, the highest distinction bestowed by the Mount Sinai Alumni Association on a member of the Mount Sinai community. Dr. Bottone earned a master's in Public Health and Bacteriology from Wagner College, in Staten Island, and a PhD in Microbiology from St. John's University. We send our deepest sympathies to his wife of 59 years, Idamarie Bottone; his daughter, Laura Giacovas; and to his grandchildren, extended family, friends, and loved ones. Kenneth L. Davis, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer, Mount Sinai Health System Dennis S. Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and President for Academic Affairs, Mount Sinai Health System

I met Dr. Bottone during my time working in the bacteriology department back in 2001. He would come around the department with medical students, during my training in the department. Fast forward to 25 years later, I thought about Dr. Bottone just now, while I'm gram staining slides, I figured I'd google him and found this obituary. I knew he was a 2nd deg. black belt in Taekwondo because we shared some kicking techniques. Dr. Bottone was one of the friendliest people I've met in the department. He was warm, always welcoming and very talkative. He was my favorite person to see every morning as I worked the midnight shift.

I met Dr. Bottone because he spoke to Irvington High School students each year about microbiology. His love of science was infectious (pun intentional) and influenced my career. We lost a great and generous man. My deepest condolences to the Bottone family.

In 1974 I met Ed for the first time, and along with the direction of Marcel Sierra determined my life´s pursuit. Thanks Ed for caring enough to smack me in the back of the head, while drawing me into the wonderful world of microbiology.

It was a real pleasure to have known Eddie. He had an amazing (and inspiring) career as a microbiologist and was a highly valued mentor to me during my college years. I am very sorry to learn of his passing.
