ELISABETH WEIDA Obituary

WEIDA--Elisabeth. August 29, 1930 - October 17, 2017. Beloved mother of Tony and Peter, and brother of Tom Riethof. Born in the Sudetenland (Czech Republic), Liz grew up in London, England and Quito, Ecuador before settling in New York City. Fluent in four languages, Liz worked in the Human Rights Division of the United Nations, then focused on raising her sons, returned to school and worked again for many years as a computer programmer at Queensborough Community College. She studied at New Jersey College for Women, the Sorbonne in Paris, and Columbia University. She earned an Associate degree in Data Processing from Queensborough Community College and a Bachelors degree from the State University of New York. Liz was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Queens for over fifty years. She was an especially dedicated long time volunteer for Hospice Care Network. She loved caring for her dogs, cooking and baking, reading, playing cards, knitting, gardening, playing piano and harmonica, listening to music, going to the theater and traveling. Liz was an exceedingly thoughtful and generous friend to many. Most of all, she was an exceptionally loving and devoted wife to her late husband Bob, mother to Tony and Peter, sister to Tom Riethof and sister in law to the late Mary Lou Riethof. Her loss to those who loved her is immeasurable. We miss her with all our hearts.

We worked together for many years and stayed in touch after Liz retired. She was a very interesting person and I valued her friendship. My condolences to her family.
