When I think of Dr. O'Connor, I smile. I remember the conferences, the late night stories during the aftermath of flight 800 when we could not sleep, the clarity in which he presented material to help those in recovery. He left the world a better place. That is all any of us can ask of this life.

I will always remember Garrett, how could one ever forget such a wonderful fellow? Fionnula, I'm so sorry for your loss, our loss. I remember all the fun times we had together, I remember his stories, and his teachings, but most of all I remember his smile. That big grin he always displayed after a story or joke.
I will never consider him gone, which brings to mind the following poem written by Henry Scott Holland;
Death is nothing at all; I have only slipped away into the next-door room. I am I, and you are you; whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by my old familiar name; speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your love, wear no false air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we all laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me as I always was. Let it be spoken without effect, without the ghost of a shadow evident. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolutely no broken continuity. What is death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you for an interval somewhere very near, just around the corner. All is well.

We've lost an iconic figure in the Irish-American community. Dr O'Connor touched the lives of many recovering families, he was a voice for the voiceless. Garrett was a dear friend, colleague and mentor. I will miss you my friend but will honor you by embracing your legacy and carrying your work forward.
