GEORGE DORSEY Obituary

DORSEY--George Edwin. George Edwin Dorsey. Born May 1, 1927 in Winnetka, Illinois, George showed both courage and restlessness early. At 17 he lied about his age to join the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II and later as a frogman during the Korean War. After the Navy, George earned his law degree from the University of Chicago. His path into professional life was bumpy; he lived hard, learned the hard way, and ultimately found his footing with the help of some friends. He built a distinguished career in the insurance industry and founded and later sold Dorsey & Evan, a firm specializing in reinsurance. In 1966, George met Jimmy Gordon, kicking off a relationship that spanned more than fifty years. In 2013 they married in San Francisco and remained devoted to one another until Jimmy's passing in 2018. Following retirement, George and Jimmy moved to New York City, where George became general manager of a globally recognized nonprofit dedicated to supporting those struggling with alcoholism and addition. He lived and led by example, helping countless people live what George called "a life worth living." He later went on to help found Navigators USA, a non- denominational, coeducational, inclusive scouting movement that grew from a single chapter in New York to hundreds across the United States. A longtime member of All Souls Unitarian Church, George was always in motion, serving on various boards and mentoring those in need. While he loved living in New York City, Maui was his happy place, and where he said he could feel Jimmy's spirit; he died there on October 26, 2025. To know George was to feel seen, heard, and encouraged. He walked through ninety-eight years with curiosity, humor, and an incredibly open heart. His love of life was obvious and infectious, and it was rare to catch him without a smile. He was known and loved by so many, and his absence will put a hurt on anyone lucky enough to have been in his orbit. He is survived by close friends Dennis Cusack and Shawn Kelly, Trippy the English Springer, Lynn English, Doug Johnson and his extended Dorsey-Gordon family. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in New York City.

George was an esteemed colleague and served with his whole heart in so many ways over so many years, helping and guiding so many of us; it was a privilege and constant learning experience to know him, serve with him, and seek his mentorship.

George was graced with energy, focus, and a love for Jimmy and his old and new friends, always. From time to time, we would speak about the life of the spirit and living fully; and that is what he pursued with gusto.
Working for and with him was exhausting, but funny, too. May the angels surround him in
Love, amidst Jimmy and all those gone before him; and maybe let George work on better golf course "up there", too!

I´m deeply grateful to have met George this past summer in Vancouver. Right up until his last year, he was curious and engaging and so appreciative of community. May George´s name stay forever in our memory.

We last spoke on September 10 and made plans to meet for brunch after his Maui trip. It pains my heart, his passing. George lived a good, vibrant life to the end. Rest in peace dear George. To Dennis and Shawn, my heartfelt condolences.

George was a dear friend since the late 70s. He taught me to never dismiss the small soft voices we hear or to draw them out. How to present an idea without my opinion in it. I will miss him and his humor, times when. Would meet and his wisdom. RuthJ

About 20 years ago, my family was on vacation in San Francisco. George was in town for business. We got together for lunch and had the usual; lively conversation and laughter. At one point with little urgency to end our visit, George stood and said; 'I must be going, I have to speak at an AA convention. Calmly and with that famous Uncle George smile, he added; Over 40,000 people will be in attendence! What an amazing human being! Such an honor to have shared time with George. I shall miss our occasional chats and visits. RIP dear friend. Peggy English-Benandi and family.

George has earned his wings ten time over for all the good he has done during his long life. A mentor to me for 25 years, helping create Navigators USA, a scouting organization for all. More importantly, he improved the lives of every person he met, helping us to stay focused on the spiritual and moral principles that make your life worth living. He will live on in the thousands of people he has touched.
