GEORGE NICHOLSON Obituary

NICHOLSON--George.

Sterling Lord Literistic, Inc. and our many writers mourn the untimely passing of our comrade and agent George Nicholson. After an influential career in publishing books for young readers, George joined the agency in 1995 and for the next 20 years proved himself to be an inspired co-worker and a fierce advocate for the work he represented. He brought to our community the same tireless energy and innovative spirit that had made his reputation as the first, hugely successful publisher of inexpensive paperback books for young readers. His store of knowledge about his chosen profession, his unerring eye for good writing, his great good humor and innate compassion are irreplaceable and will be deeply missed.

When I first met George, it was as a new author whom his wonderful colleague at Sterling Lord, Erica Silverman, had just taken on. Amazingly, he found the time to sit with me each time I came to New York, or to take me out to lunch, and amazingly, he was unfailingly encouraging. I'll always feel indebted to George for his generosity in making me feel like a part of his world, even as I still had so much to learn. I send my deepest condolences to his family and associates.

George has been a rock beneath my feet for over 40 yrs. First as my editor at Dell, then as my agent, and always as my dear friend. My heart breaks at this loss.
