GERALD SHARGEL Obituary

SHARGEL--Gerald Lawrence, died on July 16, 2022 after a long period of decline inflicted by Alzheimer's disease. A New Jersey native and lifelong New Yorker, some have said that Jerry was one of the finest criminal defense lawyers of his generation. But he placed far greater importance on being a truly loving and devoted husband to his partner in crime and wife of 55 years, Terry, who he met while attending Rutgers University. Jerry loved music of all kinds, especially Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and Bruce Springsteen, whose lyrics he would often quote and ring true now: "So don't bother me man, I ain't got no time / I'm on my way to see that girl of mine / Cause nothing matters in this whole wide world / When you're in love with a Jersey girl." Jerry also cherished and adored his two children, Johanna and David; their spouses, Jared and Lee Anne; and his six grandchildren, Casey, Miles, Tatum, Theo, James, and Eli. Jerry was predeceased by his father, Leo; and will be badly missed by his 101-year-old mother, Lillian; his sister, Judith; and so many other relatives and friends; not to mention his faithful dog, Brent. In his final years, Jerry was lucky to have been cared for at home by Lizza Regis, Jacqueline Kennedy, Carissa Bennett, and Arlene Williams. We couldn't have done it without them. A funeral will take place at Temple Israel, 112 East 75th Street, on Monday at 11 a.m. Shiva will be held on Monday to Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at Jerry's home. Contributions may be made to the Gerald Shargel '69 Scholarship at Brooklyn Law School.

As your doorman I also considered myself to be your bodyguard. Nothing I wouldn't have done to protect your well being. Observing the way you carried yourself inside and outside the courtroom I learned what it's like to carry oneself like a man. You truly were a man's man. A stand up gentleman with great dignity as well as a humble individual who commanded respect. In my eyes you were the Michael Jordan of law (the very best). I enjoyed our conversations and LOVED the fact on two separate occasions you opened up your home to me to help me navigate the problems I was going through. You are and always will be a Icon to me. If something bothered you about my job performance you told me directly to my face like a man instead of reporting me to management- just an example of the type of person you were, a true stand up honorable man. The building will never be the same without you. R.I.P. Mr. Shargel, will always have love for you.
