GERALD SHARGEL Obituary

SHARGEL--Gerald. The Brooklyn Law School community deeply mourns the loss of our renowned graduate, criminal defense lawyer Gerald Shargel. During his more than 40 years in practice at his own firm, the Law Offices of Gerald R. Shargel, and, from 2013 to 2018, as a partner at Winston & Strawn, Mr. Shargel distinguished himself as an exceptionally skilled, rigorous, and charismatic attorney in a series of prominent cases. He was also a frequent contributor to books and law journals and provided insightful media commentary on legal issues. A 1969 graduate of Brooklyn Law School, Mr. Shargel also served as a Practitioner-In-Residence, teaching evid- ence, criminal procedure, and trial advocacy. He was a devoted mentor to his students and a generous benefactor. He established the Gerald R. Shargel '69 Scholarship to provide support to students pursuing careers in criminal law. He received the Thurgood Marshall Award for Outstanding Criminal Law Practitioner from the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in 2006 and the 2015 Norman S. Ostrow Award from the New York Council of Defense Lawyers. Our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Terry; his children (and fellow attorneys) Johanna and David, a 2005 Brooklyn Law School graduate; and his grand- children. Francis J. Aquila, Chairman of the Board of Trustees; Michael T. Cahill, President, Joseph Crea Dean and Professor of Law

I am sooo sorry to read this today. He was a special friend to my brother, Billy, and I know that Billy appreciates that he was able to see him of late and tell him how he loved him. My deepest condolences to Terry and the family.

As your doorman I also considered myself to be your bodyguard. Nothing I wouldn't have done to protect your well being. Observing the way you carried yourself inside and outside the courtroom I learned what it's like to carry oneself like a man. You truly were a man's man. A stand up gentleman with great dignity as well as a humble individual who commanded respect. In my eyes you were the Michael Jordan of law (the very best). I enjoyed our conversations and LOVED the fact on two separate occasions you opened up your home to me to help me navigate the problems I was going through. You are and always will be a Icon to me. If something bothered you about my job performance you told me directly to my face like a man instead of reporting me to management- just an example of the type of person you were, a true stand up honorable man. The building will never be the same without you. R.I.P. Mr. Shargel, will always have love for you.
