GILBERT GABRIEL Obituary

GABRIEL--Gilbert Robert,

died May 7th in Sarasota, Florida. Born in Manhattan in 1922, Gil was a true gentleman and scholar. He attended Columbia Grammar School, then began college at Dartmouth before serving in the Army during WWII. After finishing his bachelor's degree at Bowdoin, he began a long, fulfilling career as an advertising and direct response writer, first with Bert Garmise and Associates, then on his own. Later in life, Gil continued his studies at the New School's Institute for Retired Professionals. He was a member of the Yale Club, where he played squash well into his nineties. He loved Greek literature, classical music, crossword puzzles, dogs, the Mets, and Campari. Predeceased by first wife, Nan Levy Gabriel and second wife, Terry Van Tell. Survived by children Sally Jo and Thomas Gilbert (Gillian), grandchildren Robyn and Evan Long, Nathaniel (Amy) and Eliza Gabriel. Gil's one- of-a-kind wit, compassion, and generosity will forever be missed by family and friends. A memorial service will be held Friday, May 12, 12:30pm at John Krtil Funeral Home, 1297 1st Ave., New York, NY. A donation to Planned Parenthood would fit with Gil's wishes.
