GILBERT MAURER Obituary

MAURER--Gilbert C. The Whitney Museum of American Art mourns the loss of Gilbert C. Maurer, who died on April 6, 2025. A longtime member of the Board, Gil became a Trustee in 1983, serving as Board President from 1994 to 1998. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Whitney, he was named Honorary Trustee upon his retirement in 2011. He remained actively involved in this capacity, giving generously to the Whitney's collection as a member of the Drawing and Print Committee, along with his pivotal support of Whitney education programs, staff, and interns. As former COO of Hearst, a member of the Hearst Corporation's Board of Directors, and a Trustee of the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, Gil also played a pivotal role in building the company's relationship with the Whitney. The Whitney was incredibly fortunate to benefit from Gil's dedication as a practicing artist, his leadership and business acumen, and his unwavering commitment to the institution over the years. His loss is deeply felt by all at the Whitney.

Mr. Maurer was the very definition of Renaissance man. A true leader, Mr. Maurer guided those with whom he worked with compassion and kindness. Sending my sincerest condolences to his large, loving family.

Gil Maurer believed in my ability to art direct House Beautiful, one of Hearst's premier publications. In turn his wise and gentle guidance gave me the confidence to produce some of my best work. He was teacher, advocate, sounding board and friend, whose opinions mattered beyond the work itself. He was also erudite, charming, a marketing genius and one-of-a-kind. He will be missed.

To the family of Gil & Ann Maurer...........we knew nothing about your parents over the many years we knew them in Palm Beach other than that Gil knew alot about photography and Ann borrowed a pair of long underwear from Dale when she was going somewhere cold and Dale volunteered. Eventually, we learned that Gil had something to do with the Hearst Building in New York and invited us for a tour. Fact is that they were terrific people whose company we simply enjoyed. Our condolences on your loss.
