GREGORY CARROLL Obituary

CARROLL--Gregory C. Age 61, of Blue Hill, ME and New York City, died suddenly while travelling on February 1st, 2013. At various times a physician, circumnavigator, boatyard owner/operator, lobster pound owner/operator, stock broker, and philanthropist, Greg's full and active life touched many, from his work supporting an orphanage in Varanasi, India where he also assisted in medical clinics, to his passionate support of the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival and School in Blue Hill. He was born in Biddeford, Maine, son of the late Harold D. and the late Henrietta M Carroll. He graduated from Canterbury School in New Milford, CT. He attended Case Western Reserve University and graduated from Bowdoin College. After college Greg joined the Merrill Lynch office in San Francisco as an account executive. In San Francisco his political support for the gay rights movement was forged as a result of the Harvey Milk upheavals which he experienced first hand. Returning to Maine, he began a new journey through redeveloping a coastal lobster business and redeveloping a boatyard, leaving both as great successes and contributions to the community. At 40 years old, he entered the Osteopathic Medical School at the University of New England and completed his training as a resident in Family Practice at the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Shortly after finishing his residency, hecaught another inspiration "went to sea," circling the Atlantic once on his Philip Rhodes designed Thunderhead and then circumnavigated the globe on his Swan 51, Alpheratz. He was a devoted friend of the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival in Blue Hill, Maine, and his latest project was to bring some of the talent, he found there (along with musical instruments he was collecting), to Nosara, Costa Rica, where he was in the process of establishing a music program in cooperation with the local public schools. More can be learned about Greg on his website: www.oncearound.org. He was a member of the Cruising Club of America, The New York Yacht Club, the Biddeford Pool Yacht Club and the Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club in Blue Hill. Greg leaves a sister, Charlotte Carroll Vial of Biddeford Pool, Maine and Evian, France, a brother Robert C. Carroll of Bar Mills, Maine and Paris, France, a brother Harold J. Carroll of Boston, MA, nine nieces and nephews including one grandnephew, and innumerable friends and loved ones around the globe. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Kneisel Hall in Blue Hill Maine.

I miss you my friend. I continue to share your wisdom and grace in my practice with clients in recovery. You helped save my life, but more importantly, through me, you continue to help others. I quote you almost on a daily basis. On my arm is a small tattoo of a crescent moon and a star. Sail on Moon Fleet

Thank you for sharing your poem Mark Harold. Where can we access Greg's log? I would love to read that if available.
I always think of Greg around the time of his birthday, not his death. We would connect at the Osteopathic conference at that time and share a meal. He would share his wisdom and frank thoughts. He taught me a lot.

Never met Greg. I've been reading the book. Wrote this am, a poem. Only to discover an hour later he passed this day. Perhaps I met him in another life.

reading the log of once around
it's as if i wish to voyage again
the trials, the wonder of life at sea
no small part of me untouched
the memories of adventure
once there a sensation forever
the motion the sounds the ocean
on little ships we march in tune
our insturment a compliment
never solo in concert

As clear as ever I hear Greg's advice and pearls of wisdom...and I live by them. Amazing man, friend, mentor, your last phone call to me went to my voicemail. But to respond: I did and always will love you too. I do double-takes often as people pass by. But I don't need to see you because I carry you with me on my journey of life. I painfully miss you, Bruce

In loving memory of my dear friend Greg--I know you are looking down at us with the sly smile of yours brother!

Aside from Greg's wonderful, room-filling laughter that was easily and generously shared with anyone so inclined, I remember this - during one of our many rides in search of people who wanted to put a cell phone tower in their backyards back in 1988 he told me - "in the end the only thing that matters is your reputation". He's right. He built his impressively and it's great advice to all the rest of us.

I was saddened to have learned of Greg's passing through the UNE Alumni Magazine today. Unfortunately, we lost touch shortly after his move to Blue Hill but had fortunately spent many life changing hours together during his years in Biddeford and Portland.

I spent my first semester senior year (Bowdoin) benefiting from the college exchange program attending Mount Holyoke College. When I returned to Bowdoin, I had the pleasure of getting to know Greg as one of his roommates living in the Senior Center.

He obviously enjoyed a full and fulfilling life and positively touched many. I am glad to have been one of those fortunate people in his life.

I loved following the story of his circumnavigation. Great details and great experience to share. Thanks and sorry for your loss,

My memories are strong of Greg. I can see His smile, hear his laughter, and feel his warmth and support. He was a teacher to me. I appreciated his vulnerability, openness, willingness and that he encouraged the same in me. He saw my strengths. I love how he embraced life, aligned with himself, joy, love. He was generous in many ways.
I always looked forward to seeing him at Convocation and to celebrate his birthday at that time. I will surely celebrate his birth and life in spirit this year and always. In gratitude and love, Karen

Mahadevji, you are always in my heart.
Friends, I share with you my journal entry of 1 Feb 2013, for such a very special person in my life:
I can't believe my hands are going to write these words … Mahadevji (Greg) just left us, heart attack on his way to Atlanta … on his return to Costa Rica where Stuart was just heading. Mahadevji, where are you? You know I really loved you. I liked and cared about you very much. I loved being around you, talking to you, speaking Spanish with you. I loved being at your home in Bluehill, cooking with you, laughing with you. You are one of a kind in my world, so special, unique, beautiful. I only hope you know that and all the sentiments of my heart. I hope you are taking this and all of our love with you. As Babaji said, there is a big hole in our fabric. Ever since I've been here at the Ashram, you have been a part of my life. Your love flows thru all that we do. That will continue forever. You will live thru us forever. While your body no longer has you, in our hearts you live. So special to me you are. For your journey's sake, I will try not to be sad, rather continue loving and appreciating you. Time has come for you to be in a different world. May your journey be smooth. Go now. All is OK. You are a beautiful example of how someone can live forever.

I remember Greg from many years ago. We were both involved in our respective families' " independant" telephone company's. He was an interesting individual, curious of life and career. Ive only heard bits and pieces of his subsequent endeavors but it's is obvious to me that he didn't just "vegitate", Instead he lived life fully with enthusiasm and caring for all he touched.

The Family

February 13, 2013

We lost a leader but gained a legend. No words can express our eternal gratitude or boundless love. For many he was a captain but for even more he was a lighthouse. His light burned bright for us all. He taught us, he loved us, he accepted our love. He cared for us, he encouraged us, he enlightened us and he learned from us. The legacy he has left in the hearts of so many will carry on.

"The storyteller makes no choice
soon you will not hear his voice
his job is to shed light
and not to master
Since the end is never told
we pay the teller off in gold
in hopes he will come back
but he cannot be bought or sold

Goodbye Greg, you did it right.

February 10, 2013

Greg will be missed but never forgotten. He has touched so many lives all over the globe. He was a generous man is so many ways. 10 years ago he and I met when he started renovating his home here in Blue Hill, I was the lucky painter chosen to work with him and his "crazy" (as he called them) ideas about painting, from half black stair treads to balusters on an angle and herringbone breadboard ceilings in flat oil based paint...... My neck still hurts! We hit it off big time. His ideas might have been crazy but he knew exactly what he wanted, it all came together, and it looks great. Within a few months I was somehow named as his caretaker, there is no way I could have know what I was getting into! A great friendship is an understatement. From boat launching's to a wild ride in an ATV ( yes Greg, you scared me). I will continue to "manage" the Deer herd in your name as well. There are too many great times and memories to put them all down.....Greg you will be missed greatly by so many people. Thank you for all you did for me I pray someday we meet face to face again to catch up over an espresso.

I first met Greg in the 60s when he was in grammar school in Biddeford. I went to work for his father at the Telephone company in 62 and he his dad would bring him to the office once in awhile. Went he went to school in CT I on occation would drive him back from home during his visits back home. And once went he came home from touring Europe I met him in NY when he got got of QEII.
I also remember the summers that he worked at the phone company. One summer he ended up with a hernia I hope it was not from the hard work.
I always enjoyd working with him over the years at Saco River Tel.
Rest in peace my friend.

Greg and I used to live in Portland's West End, and he once said that each time he passed my apartment on the corner of Clark and Pine, he said a prayer on the Tibetan Prayer Wheel. He was kidding in a sense, suggesting I sure needed prayers (and he was right) but he was also serious in the sense that he really did it. What a sense of joy he exuded and irony and curiosity about the world and glad friendship. An inspiration to us all ... and a great loss. You're in my prayers, man.

February 8, 2013

My heart is heavy with the loss of my friend of 50 years, Greg.
I can see that sideways, squinty smile of his as if it is clear as day.
Memories go back to when we were in Biddeford Pool as kids and teenagers. I won't recount them because we were mostly hovering on or in trouble.
The year was somewhere between 1979 and 80, forgive me if I am wrong. I received a call from Greg when he was living over the lobster pound and he was in trouble and hurting. I knew not to ask many questions, however, I said that I would get sorted and be up there as quick as I could. I had a 1970 Volkswagen bug and it was snowing a blizzard. 8 hours later I arrived and we spent a day as I just listened to his story.
We ended up sharing a fellowship that had saved my life, and continues to this day to help me, 35-1/2 years after I was where Greg was that day.
He never forgot his time of need and said he would always be there for me if ever the opportunity arose. Some 23 or 24 years later in 2003, my wife Sue died very suddenly from an aneurism. When the funeral was over, we had the reception back at our house. I was wandering through the crowd when I looked out on the back deck, there was my friend Greg Carroll, as he said he would be, "there when I needed him". I will never forget you Greg, and I will always love you as a brother.
My prayers to all of his family and friends, we have lost our special friend who now resides in God's peace. May we forever be blessed by the memories of the good times.
