HAROLD KUHN Obituary

KUHN--Harold W., loving husband, father, and grandfather, and professor emeritus of mathematics and economics at Princeton University, died at home on July 2. A pioneer in game theory and nonlinear programming, esteemed mentor to generations of students, staunch advocate for progressive causes and human rights, he conducted his life as a game of skill, yet knew it is a game of chance. He is mourned by his wife of 64 years, Estelle (nee Henkin), sons Cliff, Nick, and Jonathan, daughters-in-law Kathie, Beth and Michele, and was beloved "Grumpa" to Mike, Josh, Jeremy, Gabe, Lee, Emily and Jeffrey. No public service is planned; donations in his memory may be made to the ACLU.

I knew and admired Harold for five decades or more. In recent years Harold was especially helpful to me in my writing on William Karush. I extend my sincere condolences to Estelle and the Kuhn family.

With Harold's departure one more of the Princeton pioneers who contributed to establishing the areas of linear and nonlinear optimization and the theory of games is gone. It was my privelage to know him from my earliest days as a graduate student at Princeton in 1956 and to later become colleague and friend both there and for years at Mathematica.

Famous for his contributions to research, he was an exceptional pedagogue and lecturer, and in addition an elegant and cultivated man. His death saddens me deeply and marks one more step to the end of an era.

My heartfelt condolences go to Estelle and to all of is family.

Harold and I were friends for 63 years, and ardent correspondents for the last four. He was brilliant and witty, and would have been a star in
any intellectual profession. My condolences to Estelle and the children.
