1931 - 2021

NEWMAN--Harold J. The family of Harold J. Newman, 90, sadly announce his passing on September 23, 2021. Born February 5, 1931 to Herman and Ethel Newman, Harold lived a long and blessed life. From a very humble beginning in Washington Heights, NY, Harold found his success in the financial world of Wall Street. He attended the University of Oklahoma for his undergraduate degree, obtained a Masters degree in Southeast Asian Studies from the University of Pennsylvania and an M.B.A from Harvard. He served in the U.S Army in Strategic Intelligence from 1953-1955. He began his investment career with Goldman Sachs in the 1960's. Thereafter he created his own Hedge Fund Company and then settled in at Neuberger Berman for more than 33 years as a partner and managing director. Harold was a creative mind and spirit, embracing change and taking risks. He sat on many boards including The Asia Society in New York City, The Hertz Foundation and MCC Theatre in New York City. He had immense passion for the theatre and became involved as a producer in shows such as In the Heights, Hamilton, Beautiful, and Ain't Too Proud to name a few. His generosity enabled the University of Oklahoma to establish the OU Institute for US-China Issues and create the Newman Prize, the first major American award for Chinese literature. There are too many accolades to mention. Harold lived a full and vibrant life. His greatest accomplishment, above all else is his family. He was a devoted husband to his beautiful wife Ruth of almost 68 years whom he treasured more than life itself. He was a wonderful brother to his sister Ruth Goldstein. He was a loving father to his four devoted daughters Jo Ellen, Claudia (David), Jackie and Carla. And he was an adored grandfather to his six grandchildren Jordan, Jake, Eliza, Julia, Kate and Grant. Harold lived his life on his own terms and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His smile, his humor, his charm and most importantly his dance moves will be forever imbedded in the hearts and minds of all those he left behind. Burial will be private. Shiva will be held at the Newman residence: Monday, September 27 - 6pm-8pm, Tuesday, September 28 - 5pm-8pm, and Wednesday, September 29 - 5pm-7pm. The family asks all those planning to attend the Shiva to please be vaccinated.
