HARRY SPIERA Obituary

SPIERA--Harry MD. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our esteemed colleague and friend, Dr. Harry Spiera. A member of the Mount Sinai Health System community for more than 40 years, Dr. Spiera helped begin the Division of Rheumatology at The Mount Sinai Hospital and served as its first Chief. He retired from Mount Sinai in 2018. A distinguished and well-regarded rheumatologist, Dr. Spiera was, with his colleagues, among the first in the United States to describe polymyalgia rheumatica. His diligent, patient-focused research helped to differentiate and legitimize the condition. Throughout his robust career at Mount Sinai, Dr. Spiera displayed a devotion to science, research, and education that made a lasting impression on the scores of students and colleagues whom he mentored. His conscientiousness earned him the Jacobi Medallion, the highest distinction bestowed on a Mount Sinai alumnus, and the Gold-Headed Cane, a prestigious honor awarded to physicians who best exemplify the profession. Dr. Spiera received his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine. He completed an internal medicine residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital and a fellowship in rheumatology at Columbia University Medical Center. We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones. Kenneth L. Davis, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer, Mount Sinai Health System Dennis S. Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and President for Academic Affairs, Mount Sinai Health System

A most remarkable teacher and man. Certainly the greatest influence of my career. How would Dr. Spira handle this?I would often ask. Kind, empathetic and humble-and brilliant-he never forgot a patient and their illness over years -which was unique. The world needs more like him. He is sorely missed

After suffering for many years with ankylosing spondylitis, I finally found Dr. Spiera, who with great care and emotional support diagnosed me and helped relieve my pain. I was a young man then and he reassured me that we would and I would be Okay. They dont make docs like Dr. Spiera very often these days. Kind, compassionate and so very competent...

I am so sorry to learn of Dr. Spiera's passing. I remember consultations with him when I was a young woman. He was such a wonderful and bright doctor with a lovely and patient manner. His son Robert with whom I consulted at a later point clearly follows in his footsteps with his excellence.

If it wasn’t for Dr. Spiera taking care of me I wouldn’t have survived my illness of 1974. It is because of his brilliant and loving care throughout the years. He was one amazing man. So sorry to learn of his passing. There never was and never will be a man of his categories. What a mensch!

So sorry to find out about the passing of Dr. Spiera. I credit him with saving my life. I was struggling with serious physical ailments from 1979 through 1985 that were treated individually by previous physicians. I was then referred to Dr. Spiera by my rheumatologist and he diagnosed me immediately with Behcets Disease. From that point on, my health continued to improve while under his care. My life returned gradually and continually to a more normal state. I was even able to resume playing baseball in a local senior league. I remained under his care through his retirement. I always looked forward to my appointments with him. He always friendly, personable, and thorough. My heart goes out to his family. I will NEVER forget what Dr. Spiera did for me. Rest in peace, Doc.

In the year 2000 I took my father from Brazil to see Dr.Spiera, who found out what was causing so much pain to my father. Dr.Spiera was so nice to my father , Jorge Martins Costa, who almost cried when Dr.Spiera told him: I know what you have, it is ankylosing spondylitis and I will take care of you. He medicated my father and till 2003, when
my father passed away in 2003, my father never had again that excruciating pain. My father even sent to Dr.Spiera a photo from him dancing with my mother to show Dr.Spiera how well he was feeling.
We will always be grateful to Dr.Spiera , a doctor and a gentleman, who will be in our prayers.
I wish well to Dr.Spiera's family
My best regards

I first met Dr Speira in 1975 at age 25, newly diagnosed with lupus. I was terrified. His wisdom, compassion and expertise saved my life. After several years, the lupus went into remission, only to return about 25 years later. I returned to Dr. Speira. He remembered me fully and again, he saved my life. After many years, I moved to Arizona, but made an annual visit to Dr Speira. He was the kindest, wisest, most compassionate doctor and person anyone could have. When he retired, I wrote him that he gave me my life and I hope I have lived it in a way to make him proud. He has been a part of my entire adult life, and I am deeply saddened by his passing.

It was a dark and dreary rainy day when I walked into Dr.Harry Spiera's Office for the first time; when I left the sun was shining and I was feeling hopeful. I came to him not knowing we were beginning a ten year healing experience that went beyond the physical manifestations. I was very sick with an illness that was new and strange to me. Dr.Spiera helped me navigate my way down a rocky, narrow, unknown path. He helped me see the light through the trees. He cheered me on and encouraged me to live my life to the fullest. He stood by me not only as my doctor, but as a friend, a fellow warrior in the fight against disease. He and his wife even came to see me perform as an actress. Dr.Spiera was the true Champion! He will forever live in my heart and the hearts of many who were fortunate enough to know him. His strength and kindness were infectious and he was truly a blessing to this world.

Dr.Spiera left his mark; the earth is changed and continues to change from his legacy as a physician, a scientist, and most of all a companion in the healing journey with his patients. My heart reaches out to his family for their great loss. Now, I am not afraid to die since I know I will be seeing him in Heaven.

Dr. Harry Spiera what can I say about this brilliant man, this friend, the doctor I credit with saving my life.
I first met Dr. Spiera for a second opinion thank God I did! He treated me for Scleroderma over the past nearly 40 years always with kindness, compassion and heart. His knowledge and expertise were unprecedented. I've had the pleasure of your presence for so long now it's time for you to be at peace. That special place you've held in my heart will forever remain. The magnitude of a thank you can and will never equal the magnitude of having one's life saved. You will be missed immensely, Dr. Spiera, but your legend will live on.
My deepest sympathies to Marilyn, Dr. Robert Spiera, Jody Spiera Torch and Dr. Penny Spiera Turtel. May God bless you all and your families. Joanie (& Robert) Weick

There are no words to describe what Dr. Spiera meant to me. I became his patient in 1986 when I was a 22 1/2 year old college student, and I continued until his retirement. Dr. Spiera never made me feel like I was just a patient, he always made me feel like a family member. When none of the medications were helping my condition, Dr. Spiera always made me feel like he had another alternative up his sleeve; he never let me lose hope. His compassion and warmth cannot be measured, and his concern for my family and me were genuine. I sorely miss the conversations we had at my office visits. The world has lost a true mensch, doctor, human, and all-around good soul. May his memory be for a blessing.
