HELENE KAPLAN Obituary

KAPLAN--Helene. The partners, attorneys and professional staff of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP mourn the loss of our longtime colleague Helene Kaplan, who passed away on January 26, at the age of 89. Joining Skadden in 1991 and remaining with the firm until her retirement in 2014, Helene was a trailblazing attorney and a truly beloved colleague, friend and mentor. Helene served as legal adviser, director or trustee of a range of prominent institutions and foundations, including the American Museum of Natural History, Barnard College, the Bretton Woods Committee, the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Commonwealth Fund, the Council on Foreign Relations, the J. Paul Getty Trust and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She also served as a director for Bell Atlantic, ExxonMobil, JPMorgan Chase, May Department Stores, MetLife and Verizon. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Helene's husband of 70 years, Skadden of counsel (and former partner) Mark Kaplan; their daughters, Marjorie and Sue; and their grandchildren.

Helene and I met when she interviewed me for Skadden, during which I noticed a photo behind her of her daughters whom I knew from Friends Seminary. That started a friendship which continued well beyond the interview. Sad on her passing but know she made a huge difference in the lives of so many.
